Jake Paul: Canelo Alvarez fight ‘closer than we think,’ explains why he’s fighting unknown Andre August

Jake Paul: Canelo Alvarez fight ‘closer than we think,’ explains why he’s fighting unknown Andre August

Jake Paul is trying to put his money where his mouth is.

Earlier this month, Paul announced his next boxing match will be against the little-known Andre August on Dec. 15 at Caribe Royale Resort in Orlando, Fla. The matchup came as a surprise to fans as August is major diversion from most of Paul’s previous opponents, who have been either former MMA fighters or influencers. Instead, August is a 10-1-1 boxer from Houston with minimal profile. But that’s exactly why Paul says he wanted to take the matchup.

“There’s a lot of reasons,” Paul explained on The MMA Hour. “It’s mostly for me, for my experience, my road to world championship, and to grow inside the squared circle, those four corners. And to get the time under my belt. I think people, when I said I wanted to become world champion, thought it was just some gimmick or I was saying it just to sell more fights or to gain people’s attention. When I said it, I actually meant it.

“This is me acting like a boxing prospect. It’s me building my experience in the ring, taking challenges, and staying sharp in camp. Working, working, working. This is the time I need to be able to get to that level of being the best in the world. That’s where I’m going to be and that’s where I have my mind set on. It’s my biggest goal and this is the path to get there. It’s no longer about business and making all this money. I’ve already generated $250 million, $200 million in pay-per-view sales. We’ve done that. Great. Congratulations. This is about real boxing now.”

David Benavidez dismantles Demetrius Andrade in six, calls out Canelo Alvarez

David Benavidez dismantles Demetrius Andrade in six, calls out Canelo Alvarez

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA – NOVEMBER 25: David Benavidez (L) fights Demetrius Andrade in a WBC super middleweight title fight at Michelob ULTRA Arena on November 25, 2023 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Benavidez retained his title with a TKO. (Photo by David Becker/Getty Images)

David Benavidez was asked after his knockout of Demetrius Andrade what Mike Tyson said during their short post-fight meeting at ringside.

“I just told Mike Tyson that I love him,” Benavidez said in the ring. “And thanks so much for the motivation he’s given me. It’s not every day that a legend like Mike Tyson gives people a nickname. I just want to live up to my name.”

The nickname Tyson bestowed upon him is “The Mexican Monster.” And, yes, he’s living up to it.

That was never more clear than on a dramatic Saturday night at Michelob Altra Anena in Las Vegas, where Benavidez dropped, pummeled and finally stopped one of the sport’s most avoided champions after the sixth round.

Benavidez, an “interim” beltholder, declared himself the best 168-pound champion in the world after the fight. That’s a notion an increasing number of knowledgeable observers are beginning to buy into but there is only one way to prove it.

He has to fight undi

David Benavidez vs Demetrius Andrade results: Benavidez steamrolls Andrade, calls out Canelo

David Benavidez vs Demetrius Andrade results: Benavidez steamrolls Andrade, calls out Canelo

LAS VEGAS — “The Mexican Monster” is calling his shot and the pressure is on Canelo Alvarez to answer the call.

David Benavidez pulverized the previously unbeaten Demetrius Andrade and forced the former two-division world champion to quit on the stool at the end of the sixth round to retain the WBC interim super middleweight champion at the Michelob Arena at the Mandalay Bay.

It was a systematic destruction that saw Benavidez’s pressure eventually break down Andrade in a violent display of offense and one that will almost certainly see fans demand a fight between the 26-year-old and the undisputed champion Canelo.

“Let’s give the people what they want to see and they want to see David Benavidez against Canelo!” Benavidez said afterward.

“Give me the fight we all want to see.”@Benavidez300 WANTS the king next 👑@Canelo | #BenavidezAndrade pic.twitter.com/631kn5njzx

The fight was as violent as many anticipated as Benavidez stalked Andrade from the opening bell. Andrade was successful early on circling away and changing levels to keep the target small. He did land but there was nothing to cause Benavidez to be cautious with his approach.

By round three the pressure began to cause Andrade to wilt and Benavidez saw openings to put power punches behind his long jab. The fourth round was all Benavidez as he unloaded bludgeoning combinations as Andrade couldn’t find an escape route. A pile of uppercuts and right hands wore down the former champion before a vicious right hand put Andrade down at the end of the round.

From that point, it was all Benavidez.

The champion never stopped looking for the finish and patiently stalked his prey with booming uppercut and combinations. Once the multi-punch combinations were unleashed by the end of round five, Andrade’s punch resistance was reduced to nil.

With nothing left in the gas tank and an incensed champion looking to end the fight, the sixth round was an abusive display of power from Benavidez. Multiple uppercuts and right hands found their home as Andrade wobbled around the ring trying to keep his balance. He’d make it out of the round but his corner had seen enough.

Benavidez improves to 28-0 with his 24th victory coming by way of knockout. Canelo has attempted to steer clear of Benavidez but how much longer can he avoid “The Mexican Monster?”

Here’s how it all went down in Las Vegas.

Disappointed Robert Garcia Explains Jermell Charlo Decided to “Survive” Against Canelo Alvarez

Disappointed Robert Garcia Explains Jermell Charlo Decided to “Survive” Against Canelo Alvarez

Almost two months after Jermell Charlo vs. Canelo Alvarez, trainer and former professional boxer Robert Garcia explained what went wrong with Jermell Charlo on September 30th. In this context, besides congratulating Charlo for the money he made from fighting Alvarez, Garcia declared he was disappointed in ‘Iron Man’.

Likewise, after branding Charlo a “boring a**” fighterGarcia critically explained how Jermell was initially deluded. In his opinion, right after Charlo realized Canelo’s true potential, he abandoned his warrior mentality and switched to survival mode. Well, here is what Garcia had to say.

Gaining extra pounds was detrimental to Jermell Charlo’s performance against Canelo Alvarez

Although Robert Garcia praised Charlo for taking the bout against Alvarez, he felt climbing two weight classes harmed Jermell’s performance. According to him, even though Charlo gained the required weight, ‘Iron Man’ was no match for the power that Canelo possessed at Super Middleweight. Likewise, Garcia felt that after Charlo felt Alvarez’s power, he knew he could not win the bout.

Moving up two weight classes, especially, from 154 to 168, it’s a big jump. Two weight classes at Super Welterweight [means] you’re talking about 12 lbs. It’s a big difference,” said Garcia. In his opinion, even though Charlo’s team felt ‘Iron Man’ had sufficient height, speed, and footwork, Jermell realized he was mistaken the moment he exchanged

David Benavidez: Demetrius Andrade is the hardest task besides Canelo Alvarez

David Benavidez: Demetrius Andrade is the hardest task besides Canelo Alvarez

David Benavidez and Demetrius Andrade square off at Michelob ULTRA Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday, November 25. The winner of the bout is expected to determine the next contender to challenge Canelo Alvarez for his undisputed super middleweight title. The pair battles it out in the 12-round main event live on pay-per-view.

The co-main event features undefeated WBC middleweight champion Jermall Charlo in his ring return against former world title challenger Jose Benavidez Jr. The pair meets in the non-title bout, scheduled for 10 rounds.

Former two-time WBC super middleweight champion David Benavidez (27-0, 23 KOs) makes the second defense of his interim WBC 168-pound belt. The Phoenix native last fought in March, when he scored a unanimous decision against fellow former champion Caleb Plant. In May 2022, the 26-year-old stopped David Lemieux in the third round and landed the strap.

“Junior and I pushed each other to the limit,” David Benavidez said at an open workout that kicked off the fight week in Las Vegas. “This is something we’ve dreamed about since we were little kids. He’s co-main event, I’m main event for a pay-per-view fight. It doesn’t get better than this. We’re just really excited to be here.

“I’m just grateful and happy to be in this position. I’m also happy to be able to give the fans this type of entertainment while everybody’s at their families’ houses on Saturday. It’s going to be a great night of boxing.

“I think the intensity comes from experience. With everything I’ve been through in my life, I’m probably the most motivated I’ve ever been in my life. I have my son, my wife and my baby Khloe on the way. She’s going to be born in three weeks. I’m motivated on a different level right now, and I really do want to prove to you guys that I’m the best in the world.

“I agreed to this fight with Andrade because he’s the hardest. Other than myself, he’s the best in the division. He’s the hardest task besides Canelo, so I want to challenge myself. I really do want to be the best, and I’m

American YouTuber and professional boxer Jake Paul believes he is on the trajectory to fight super middleweight champion Canelo Álvarez someday.

Paul made the remarks to Ariel Helwani on the MMA Hour (h/t Jed I. Goodman).

“I think the path that I’m on now tees me up in the future to fight Canelo,” Paul said in part.

“You know, it’s even just showing him that I can go 10 or 12 rounds with you, and I’ve done that with real, legitimate pro boxers and beat them. So when I beat these guys in the year or two to come and continue to raise the level of opposition, I think me vs. Canelo becomes a really interesting fight…”
