Canelo announces shock Jermell Charlo showdown for September

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez will defend his super-middleweight world titles against Jermell Charlo on September 30 in Las Vegas.

Canelo is the undisputed WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO champion and it had been thought the Mexican would face Jermell’s twin brother Jermall next.

However, it is undisputed super-welterweight champion Jermell Charlo who will be moving up two weight divisions to face 32-year-old Canelo.

“Undisputed vs undisputed,” Canelo declared on Twitter, in an announcement that surprised the boxing world.

Undisputed vs. Undisputed: Canelo Alvarez vs. Jermell Charlo set for September 30th

Canelo Alvarez has had a bit of an opponent shake-up, and will now be facing Jermell Charlo in September.

Canelo Alvarez and Jermell Charlo

The Mexican superstar is fresh off his return opposite John Ryder in May. That bout was a return in more ways than one for Canelo Alvarez, as it was his first bout in Mexico in over a decade. In front of his home fans, the super-middleweight champion didn’t disappoint, defeating ‘The Gorilla’ by decision.

Following the victory, Canelo Alvarez called for a rematch with Dmitry Bivol. The two previously faced off last May, with the light-heavyweight champion scoring an upset decision win. With that in mind, Dmitry Bivol declined the rematch, especially after his foe’s team declined to raise his purse for the rematch.

Australia’s Tim Tszyu’s world title fight off as Jermell Charlo moves up two weights

Australian boxer Tim Tszyu’s slated mega-fight with Jermell Charlo is officially off after the American opted to take on Mexican superstar Canelo Álvarez instead.

Charlo will move up two divisions to fight Álvarez for the undisputed super-middleweight crown in Las Vegas on 30 September.

That date is precisely the deadline the WBO had imposed for Tszyu and Charlo to square off for all four super-welterweight belts.

Tszyu and Charlo had initially been scheduled to fight on 29 January before Charlo reported two broken bones in his left hand last Christmas.

With Charlo moving up to challenge the so-called face of boxing, the WBO is expected to elevate the undefeated Tszyu from interim to full world champion.

But Saturday’s shock revelation is still a hammer blow to the Australian.

Tszyu had retained the interim title with a specta

Canelo Alvarez to face Jermell Charlo (not Jermall) on Sept. 30

Canelo Alvarez evidently is going to fight Charlo in September. Only it’s not the Charlo it was reported to be.

The undisputed 168-pound champion indicated on social media that he is going to face undisputed 154-pound champ Jermell Charlo, not his twin brother and 160-pound titleholder Jermall Charlo. And sources have confirmed the news.

Alvarez’s first fight with Premier Boxing Champions will take place on Sept. 30 in Las Vegas, he said on Twitter.

“Undisputed vs. Undisputed,” was how he billed the matchup.
