Jesus Alejandro Ramos

“I was excited when I heard I was gonna fight Lubin. I respect what he’s done as a fighter. He built himself back up after the Jermell Charlo fight and showed he’s a warrior.

“This is what I’m here for. I’m here to prove I’m one of the best and to do that I have to beat the best. It was an exciting moment when I was able to sign on for this fight.

“People didn’t really know what level I was on before the Joey Spencer fight. I had to show that I was on a different level and that I deserve to be on a stage like this.

“Hopefully with a win people will say I’m at the top of the division. That’s not up to me though. I just have to keep winning and proving myself. The main thing is to keep growing as a fighter. I’m gonna take a lot from this fight and have a lot more experience. I’m gonna be a different boxer after this and I’ll be ready for that title shot when it comes.

“I have good power, but I’m not relying on it. I have skills too and I’m gonna show them on September 30. I’m an intelligent fighter and everyone is gonna see that with a worthy opponent like Lubin across from me.

“I’ve faced tough guys like Brian Mendoza and Vladimir Hernandez, but Lubin looks like he’d be the toughest so far. He’s right up there because he’s got a lot of experience and we respect what he can do.

“I do feel like I’m the fresher fighter, but it’s not something I’m banking on. We’re working hard to be at my very best. He’s been in some wars, so we’ll see if he’s got wear and tear from it.

“Whatever I have to do to win, I’m ready for. I’m here to dominate. I want to make a statement, and in order to do that, I have to dominate. That’s the plan.”

Erickson Lubin

“The mindset hasn’t changed for me. I still have a chip on my shoulder. I’m going into this fight very hungry. I have a young, hungry kid in front of me, but I’m young and hungry as well. You can expect fireworks on September 30. I’m looking to win and be in the big fights against the best guys in the division.

“I’m fueled by adversity. My first title challenge against Charlo brought me back to working real hard and eventually winning six fights in a row. I was winning the fight against Sebastian Fundora and losing fueled me to go back to the drawing board and work even harder

Smith wants Alvarez rematch | ‘I had my moments in first fight’

Smith wants Alvarez rematch | ‘I had my moments in first fight’

Liam Smith has a big rematch coming up next and he would welcome another, against Canelo Alvarez, afterwards too.

On September 2, live on Sky Sports Box Office, Smith fights Chris Eubank Jr. He hopes that a second successive win over one of the biggest names in the middleweight division could pave the way for him to rematch Alvarez.

After all Jermell Charlo is stepping up from super-welter to challenge the Mexican superstar for his super-middleweight titles on September 30.

Sky Sports News’ Eleanor Roper and John Dennen reflect on the first press conference for Smith v Eubank II.

Smith fought Alvarez in 2016 when the Liverpudlian was the WBO world champion and they were both super-welterweights.

Canelo halted him inside the distance, but it’s a rematch the Briton would still welcome.

“I think everyone knows I would. It was a fight that I loved,” he told Sky Sports. “It was a fight that was my type of fight. I loved it, even though I got stopped in the ninth I loved every part of the fight.

“I had moments in the fight also. It’s not like I couldn’t hit Canelo. He was there to be hit and I landed enough shots, but I just wasn’t big enough and strong enough. But of course, I’d take that.”

Charlo may be the undisputed champion at 154lbs but Smith does expect Alvarez to beat him: “I just think Canelo is too good for him in every department and Canelo wins that one well.”

He is not convinced that the great Mexican is declining, even though Alvarez was comprehensively defeated by Dmitry Bivol at light-heavyweight last year.

Undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Álvarez isn’t interested in a fight against Jake Paul amid the former YouTuber’s callouts, but he can see an exhibition match between them down the line.

During an appearance on The Breakfast Club, Álvarez was asked if he’d be interested in a fight against Paul and he said, “Yeah, maybe, but not right now. … For me, not right now, because I’m chasing other things in my career. But you never know, maybe later.” When asked if it would be after he retired, he said, “Yeah.”

Álvarez was also asked if he felt that a professional fight against Paul would tarnish his legacy or be disrespectful to the sport of boxing and he responded, “I think so.”

Paul is coming off a unanimous decision win against former UFC star Nate Dia

Canelo Alvarez, Jermell Charlo locked in during kickoff press conference for superfight

Canelo Alvarez, Jermell Charlo locked in during kickoff press conference for superfight

No trash talk. No drama. Just two deadly serious, focused fighters.

That was the tone at the kickoff news conference Tuesday afternoon in New York City to promote the pay-per-view fight between undisputed champions Canelo Alvarez and Jermell Charlo on Sept. 30 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

The fighters demonstrated nothing but respect for one another — even shaking hands after their staredown — and promised a battle to remember.

“I’m happy to be in this position right now, in the big fights,” said Alvarez, the 168-pound champion. “Jermell Charlo is a great fighter, the undisputed champion in his weight class (154). He takes challenges like me.

“I always take risks. We love being involved in these kind of fights.”

Alvarez (59-2-2, 39 KOs) was expected to face Charlo’s brother, 160-pound titleholder Jermall Charlo. However, promoters threw everyone a curve when they announced the smaller, but more accomplished sibling would be the opponent.

The Mexican star has been at or near the top of all pound-for-pound lists while Charlo (35-1-1, 19 KOs) has steadily climbed them, the result of a series of high-profile victories.

And while Charlo has never taken part in a superfight like this one, he seemed to handle the bright spotlight well at the opening news conference at Palladium Times Square.

He looked intense, perhaps a bit nervous as he walked to the center stage after he was introduced. However, he was at ease during his opening statement and when he fielded questions from moderator Brian Custer of Showtime.

The big question for Charlo is size, as he will be moving up two weight classes to face a future Hall of Famer. Charlo is taller than Alvarez and didn’t look appreciably thinner but he’s accustomed to trading punches with 154-pounders, not those at 168.

He acknowledged the challenge but believes the importance of size is overblown.

“A lot of guys are worrying about the wrong things,” he said, “moving up in weight, doing thi

Canelo Alvarez ‘100% focused’ on Jermell Charlo, who ‘came here to win this fight’

Undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez defends his title against undisputed super welterweight champion Jermell Charlo live on Showtime PPV from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday, September 30. At the launch press conference in New York City, the fighters went face to face for the first time and previewed their bout.

Mexico’s Canelo (59-2-2, 39 KOs) of Guadalajara, Jalisco makes the third defense of his WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO 168-pound belts. American 154-pound champion Charlo (35-1-1, 19 KOs) of Lafayette, Louisiana moves up a weight class and looks to become a two-weight undisputed champion. The contest marks the first time in the four-belt era, when reigning undisputed champions square off inside the ring.

In Australia, Canelo Alvarez vs Jermell Charlo airs on Sunday, October 1 live on Kayo.

Also at the press conference were Canelo’s trainer and manager Eddy Reynoso, Charlo’s trainer Derrick James, President of TGB Promotions Tom Brown and President of Showtime Sports Stephen Espinoza. Here is what the participants had to say from Palladium Times Square:

Canelo Alvarez

“Thank you to Jermell for taking this fight. I’m very happy to be in this position and to be in big fights. Jermell is a great fighter who takes on big challenges just like I do. I always take risks.

“Jermell is a great fighter and this is a fight that’s been out there as a possibility for a long time. Now is the correct time for this fight.

“I’m gonna put everything into the ring. My experience, my power and my skills. It’s going to take everything to win this fight. It’s going to be a great night for the fans.

“It’s good that people are saying I’ve lost a step. It’s fine. I know why I didn’t look as good in my last two fights. I know why and I’m different now. I’m preparing now for a different type of fighter.

“I’m 100% focused on this fight. Then we’ll see what happens after. Everyone wants drama and for us to fight on this stage, but when two fighters are 100% focused like we are right now, it’s gonna make it a great fight in the ring.

“I have everything that he says he has as well. I have experience and I’ve been in this position a lot of times. That’s why we’re here. We’re going to find out if he’s got enough on September 30.

“I love being in these kinds of fights. Stay tuned on September 30 because this is gonna be a great night for boxing.”

Jermell Charlo

“This is a long time coming. Canelo and Eddy are legends in the game of boxing. They’ve put on great shows and I want to be the one that gets in there and takes it all away from them.

“Me and my brother Jermall have been putting on for boxing and it’s our time now. A lot of people are worried about the wrong things. When you want to win something this big, you have to risk it all.

“I just want to quiet my haters and doubters and turn non-believers into believers. I’ve watched a lot of great people in the sport of boxing and now I think this is the best moment for me to
