“He’s So Slow”: Canelo Alvarez’s Combos in Recent POV Training Clip Fails to Impress Fans

A new video of Canelo Alvarez trying a particular combination seems to be fast-graining traction. talkSPORT‘s Michael Benson shared the clip on his X. The undisputed super middleweight champion is preparing hard for his upcoming title defense against fellow Mexican Jaime Munguia. But how do the fans feel about the training clip? Die-hard fans must be feeling excited. However, among those who commented, there were a few who didn’t feel likewise.

The Alvarez-Munguia match takes place on May 4, the Cinco de Mayo weekend, at the T Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The P4P great last fought and defeated Jermell Charlo during his third title defense. The Tijuana-born former light middleweight champion, on the other hand, forced an early stoppage on John Ryder later in January this year.

Michael Benson’s tweet read, “Canelo Alvarez showing a first-person POV of what Jaime Munguia will be facing on May 4th…” The clip begins with the world champion throwing a jab with the leading hand. It is followed by an uppercut (right) on a mitt held by a trainer. From the looks of it, it appears that the same person is also holding a punching bag tightly. So basically, Alvarez is working on two props simultaneously. The third punch is Alvarez’s now-well-known left hook to the body, here it being thrown on the punching bag. Then a straight right to the mitt and finally a second left hook complete the combination.

Given their profiles, few expect the fight to go the whole distance. It could be a high-octane slugfest, with both boxers relying on trademark hits to stop the opponent.

Canelo Alvarez’s interminable search for May 4 opponent has become ridiculous

Canelo Alvarez’s interminable search for May 4 opponent has become ridiculous

Canelo Alvarez has to fight someone, right?

The undisputed 168-pound champion and elite power broker is expected to defend his titles on May 4 — only two-plus months from now — in Las Vegas but no clear choice has emerged.

First, it was Jermall Charlo. It seemed all but certain that Alvarez would face the 160-pound titleholder in his second fight with Premier Boxing Champions, particularly after Alvarez announced he would take on an “American.”

Only it didn’t happen for whatever reason. Now it appears Alvarez has moved on. He reportedly has split with PBC, which represents Charlo.

Then unbeaten 168-pound contender Jaime Munguia of Mexico emerged as a leading candidate in spite of Alvarez’s “American” comment.

Promoter Eddie Hearn, who is affiliated with DAZN, has pushed for an Alvarez-Munguia fight. ESPN even reported that Alvarez had agreed to face his countryman, who knocked out John Ryder on Jan. 27.

Still, no announcement has been made. And Oscar De La Hoya, Munguia’s promoter, said he doesn’t believe the fight will happen.

“No chance. I don’t think so, I really don’t,” De La Hoya told comb

When is Canelo Alvarez vs. Jaime Munguia? Fight date, start time, PPV price, odds & card for 2024 boxing fight

Boxing fans waited for Canelo Alvarez’s next move with extreme interest.

Finally, they have their answer: Canelo will compete in a Mexico vs. Mexico showdown, but not against expected challenger David Benavidez. Instead, Canelo will face a young star competing in the biggest fight of his career.

Canelo is set to fight Jaime Munguia on May 4, defending his status as undisputed super middleweight champion. The fight will air on Amazon Prime Video and take place in T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. It will also air on DAZN.

The event will not be hosted by Golden Boy, where Munguia is signed. It will fall under Canelo’s deal with Premier Boxing Champions. Canelo confirmed the fight on social media after ESPN first reported it.

“I’m very proud and excited to be able to make this fight,” said Canelo. “A Mexican versus another Mexican is always a huge fight and it’s been a while since there’s been one like this. It’s great to give an opportunity like this to a fighter that’s earned it like Jaime has. It gives me a lot of joy that two Mexicans will be facing each other in such a big fight for the sport.”

A four-division champion, Canelo turned pro in 2005. He has beaten several of the sport’s best, including Shane Mosley, Miguel Cotto and Gennady Golovkin. In less than 11 months, Canelo became the undisputed super middleweight champion, beating Callum Smith, Billy Joe Saunders and Caleb Plant. He failed to capture light heavyweight gold a second time in his career, losing to Dmitry Bivol in May 2022. That was his first loss since 2013 against Floyd Mayweather, ending a 16-fight unbeaten streak.

Canelo rebounded by beating Golovkin in a trilogy contest. After undergoing wrist surgery, Canelo returned in May, beating John Ryder to retain his titles. He embarrassed Jermell Charlo in September, and many expected him to face his brother Jermall.

Sources: Canelo talks PBC reunion, Munguia fight
  • Mike Coppinger, ESPNMar 5, 2024, 10:20 PM ET

Canelo Alvarez and Premier Boxing Champions are discussing a reunion, sources told ESPN, after the sides split last week with two fights remaining on a three-fight deal signed in June.

Alvarez, boxing’s top star, is in talks with PBC about a May 4 pay-per-view fight vs. fellow Mexican fighter Jaime Munguia in Las Vegas, sources said.

Alvarez, ESPN’s No. 4 pound-for-pound boxer, was lined up for an undisputed super middleweight championship defense against Jermall Charlo in May. However, Alvarez and PBC couldn’t agree to terms for the matchup, which allowed him contractually to explore other options.

Alvarez (60-2-2, 39 KOs) discussed a return to streaming service DAZN for bouts against Munguia and Edgar Berlanga this year, but when those talks stalled, the champion returned to the table with PBC, sources said.

Jake Paul earns second-straight first-round victory, calls out Canelo Alvarez: ‘I’m the face of this sport’

Jake Paul predicted a second-round knockout on Saturday night – he was too generous.

The YouTuber turned boxer earned a first-round victory over Ryan Bourland on Saturday night in Puerto Rico (he was accurate in his sub-six-minute victory).

Paul clearly wanted to get things over with early, striking early and connected on a hard shot to the ribs – Bourland’s left side was clearly red after the blow.

But shortly after, Paul took it a step further, piecing up Bourland in the face and making the former Golden Gloves champion dazed.

Bourland couldn’t even return with any jabs, going in straight self-defense mode. But it wasn’t enough.

Trapping him in the corner, Paul threw a bunch of haymakers, and the referee called it a night. The fight lasted just two minutes and 37 seconds.

“I wanted it to be a little longer to give the fans some more time,” he admitted post-fight.
