The Winner
This week’s winner is Canelo, a dog rescued from Louisiana who is now living in his forever home in New York.
Owner Evelin Portillo welcomed him into the family from Port Washington’s North Shore Animal League, and he has a seriously friendly personality.
“When we take him for walks, he thinks he is going to be pet by everyone he encounters,” Portillo told Newsweek.
Canelo loves praise more than food, and Portillo said the rewards of being his owner are endless.
“He is our second puppy,” she said. “We learned how to handle a puppy from our previous dog. He gave our family 15 years of love and laughs.”
The Finalists
Our first finalist this week is a bulldog, Scottie, who lives in Alabama with owner LaSha’ Page. Almost 4 years old, he has grown into a huge 120-pound pup.
When he was younger, he had to have surgery on both of his hind legs to correct an injury to torn ligaments, similar to an ACL injury in humans.
“This long period of inactivity after the surgery resulted in this substantial weight gain and now makes it more difficult than normal gain to get rid of because it’s very stressful on his body,” Page told Newsweek.
With his injury fixed, Scottie is now doing well.
