Kamaru Usman might have a welterweight title defense against Leon Edwards on tap at UFC 278 on Aug. 20, but he’s already looking ahead to a fresh challenge.

Usman told TMZ Sports in an interview published on Tuesday he wants a date with boxing star Canelo Alvarez at some point.

“It’s never been done, pound-for-pound versus pound-for-pound,” he said. “And, they’re significantly close in weight classes to be able to do it — why not?! … When you hear that that fight’s announced, everyone’s going to be watching that fight.”

Usman first told TMZ Sports in March he was hopeful of fighting Alvarez in the fall. He thought the event could net revenues of nine figures.

In April, Usman and Alvarez exchanged words on social media:

Canelo Alvarez @Canelo

Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn has fired back at Oscar De La Hoya over recent criticism.

During an interview with MMAFighting, De La Hoya claimed Hearn put Canelo Alvarez in a lose-lose situation by booking him against Dmitry Bivol. Canelo lost the fight in a bid for the WBA Light Heavyweight Championship.

De La Hoya’s argument was that Bivol was an undefeated fighter with no name recognition, who could do damage to Canelo’s brand all for a “meaningless” fight.

Hearn fired back at De La Hoya during an appearance on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani.

While speaking to FanSided, Gennadiy Golovkin explained his disappointment with how Canelo Alvarez handled losing to Dmitry Bivol.

In the build-up to their trilogy boxing bout, Canelo Alvarez has had plenty of negative things to say about Gennadiy Golovkin. Now, it’s Golovkin’s turn.

Golovkin and Alvarez fight for the third time at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday, Sept. 17. They fought to a draw in 2017, but Alvarez was awarded the majority decision in their 2018 rematch.

Since their first fight, there has been a great deal of tension between Golovkin and Alvarez. Alvarez tested positive for clenbuterol before their second bout. He attributed the positive test to tainted meat, but Golovkin was critical of Alvarez’s positive test.

Golovkin’s comments stuck with Alvarez, who hasn’t had many nice things to say about Golovkin since. He recently expressed his strong dislike for Golovkin to FanSided.

“I think [I dislike] Golovkin a little more because Caleb Plant, he’s a person who tells you what he thinks,” Alvarez said to FanSided. “He tells you the truth, right?

Kamaru Usman admits fighting Jake Paul would be a gamble, explains why he prefers Canelo Alvarez

Kamaru Usman doesn’t see too much to gain from boxing Jake Paul.

It would be a lucrative payday for the UFC welterweight champion and No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter, but Usman (20-1 MMA, 15-0 UFC) thinks the risk outweighs the reward. That’s why he continues to express interest in boxing undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez, a massive challenge that would also result in a big payday.

“Me fighting Jake Paul, I’m helping him,” Usman said on the “I Am Athlete” podcast. “I beat Jake Paul, nobody cares. You’re supposed to beat
