Canelo reveals he went into Golovkin fight injured

Canelo reveals he went into Golovkin fight injured

Canelo Alvarez has revealed he went into Saturday night’s fight with Gennadiy Golovkin carrying an injury.

The Mexican superstar has torn the cartilage in the wrist of his left hand and he admitted the pain it caused him was “really bad”.

“It hurts everywhere. I had these issues since the Caleb Plant fight. I was like it’s okay, it’s okay, later, later, then it started [to get] really bad. I need surgery,” Alvarez said.

Despite the injury he roundly outboxed Golovkin over 12 rounds to bring an end to their rivalry, win a unanimous decision and defend his unified WBC, IBF, WBA and WBO super-middleweight titles.

“With my hand problems I outjabbed the best jabber in the world in Gennadiy Golovkin,” Alvarez said.

“I think towards the end of the fight I obviously started to get a bit fatigued and that’s because we’ve not been able to work explosively in the gym. But despite all the problems that we’ve had, I was really happy with my performance tonight,” he added.

“I wanted to get that KO but it didn’t come because he’s a great fighter. That’s why there are 12 round

Canelo Alvarez Punches Through GGG and Into Boxing History

Canelo Alvarez Punches Through GGG and Into Boxing History

As much as the boxers themselves, boxing trilogies have long helped frame the epochs of their sport. Rubber matches such as Ali vs. Frazier, Ali vs. Norton, Patterson vs. Johansson, Zale vs. Graziano, and other triptychs determined who was the better of two evenly matched masters of the noble art.

Last night at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, we witnessed a punctuating moment in pugilistic history, when Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (42-1-2, 37 knockouts) and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (58-2-2, 39 knockouts) clashed for the third time, with Alvarez defending his undisputed super-middleweight title.

In September 2017, Alvarez eked out—or perhaps it would be more apt to say, “was gifted with”—a draw. A year later, Alvarez made adjustments and improved but only enough to come away with a hotly contested split decision victory.

Given the astronomical pay-per-view numbers and the high quality of the two fights, it would have been logical for promoters to arrange a third deciding contest immediately. Then again, logic and boxing have not always been good partners.

The boxing public has had to wait four years for these consummate artists of violence to reunite under the klieg lights. As it became evident this evening, the delay was more of a liver shot to the 40-year-old Golovkin than it was to the 32-year-old Alvarez.

“He’s a strong fighter,” Álvarez told the crowd in Las Vegas. “For me, I’m just glad to share the ring with him. He’s a really good fighter. I’m glad to be involved in that kind of fight.”

Golovkin returned the sentiments to Álvarez.

“Everybody knows this is high level, the best fight for boxing,” Golovkin said. “Look at his face. Look at my face. It’s high level, because we trained well, and this shows that we did a very good fight, very good quality.”

Round-by-Round

Canelo Alvarez vs Gennady Golovkin

Round 1- Canelo looks to push Golovkin back with some big swings, mostly missing. GGG responds by peppering him with jabs. Cagey through the middle of the round, lot of feinting. Tight round, but Golovkin’s jab scored. 10-9 Golovkin

Round 2- Canelo starts round 2 by countering Golovkin’s jabs. Going big on the left hook and overhand right. Not a lot of bodywork from either man yet, Golovkin fires a right downstairs now. Canelo finishing the round the stronger. 10-9 Canelo, 19-19

Round 3- Every time Golovkin throws his right hand Canelo counters hard over the top. Golovkin a bit hesitant to throw. Lands a solid jab but eats a threa-punch counter. Golovkin pushes him back a little to end the round. 10-9 Canelo, 29-28

Round 4- Canelo’s lead left to the head on the money so far. Pushes Golovkin back with right hands to the body. Golovkin not doing much other than jab, and finding that countered too. Lots of twitchy movement but the action is coming from Canelo. 10-9 Canelo, 39-37

Round 5- Golovkin starts the round pushing Canelo back with a busy jab. Soon back to being forced bac, Canelo working the body consistently now. Not everything is landing, but Golovkin isn’t punishing the misses. Some of the bodywork is edging around behind, bringing a warning from the referee, but Golovkin’s starting to feel the pace. 10-9 Canelo, 49-46

Round 6- Golovkin’s corner gave him a talk between rounds, but it’s not happening for him in the ring. Canelo’s slipping most of his jabs. Pushes Canelo back a little bit through the middle of the round, some effectiveness with the jab, but Canelo ends strong with counters again. 10-9 Canelo, 59-55

Round 7- Canelo takes the lead to start the round. Not waiting for counters now, throwing combinations behind his own jab. An uppercut-right-hook combination makes Golovkin wince a bit. Backs off a little but even when not in the corners, Golovkin’s struggling to get off. Finishes with some jabs, Canelo counters with a right to the body. 10-9 Canelo, 69-64

Round 8- The story of the fight here is that both can see what the other one’s doing, but Canelo can avoid it and Golovkin can’t. Canelo working with Golovkin when the Kazakh tries to push, and punishes him when he wants to back off. More right hands coming from GGG now, but Canelo fires right back. 10-9 Canelo, 79-73

Round 9- Golovkin opens with a lead-hand uppercut-hook combination, which scores, but Canelo responds immediately. G

Canelo vs GGG 3 results and technical analysis: Age meets Hubris

Canelo vs GGG 3 results and technical analysis: Age meets Hubris

Saul Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin stepped into the ring for the third and final time on Saturday night. The winner was clear, the scores controversially close — especially those two 7-5 cards, but Bloody Elbow had it 8-4 ourselves so we can’t quibble too much about that. We won’t spend much time litigating that here though. Instead we’ll take a look at the story of the fight, why Canelo was so dominant early and why (scores aside) he did seem to fade a bit later to allow Golovkin at least some success.

The Breakdown

A clue to the latter can be found right from the start. After an opening exchange of jabs, the first meaningful punch Canelo threw was a massive left hand that missed, left him overbalanced, and needed some snappy recovery work to get away from danger. He calmed it down for the rest of the opening round, in which nothing major happened, but after that those swinging punches and explosive movements both to close ground and recover were a feature of the fight. There was clearly a gameplan going on there – whether emotional, in anger at Golovkin, or coldly rational, reasoning that Golovkin would find it difficult to respond to these, we can’t know, but either way they had their effect early on.

Golovkin’s age is the sad part of this equation — four years ago he’d never have allowed someone over-committing in front of him to get away with it, but this time he just couldn’t get himself moving fast enough to close distance and respond. That gap in response was visible for him against Murata in April, and that must have been in Canelo’s mind when he came up with the plan.

‘This Fight Is Important For My Legacy’. Boxing Preps For Álvarez-Golovkin Trilogy

‘This Fight Is Important For My Legacy’. Boxing Preps For Álvarez-Golovkin Trilogy

At the beginning of this year, middleweight boxing superstar Canelo Álvarez was widely considered the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. But to the surprise of pugilism pundits worldwide, Álvarez slipped. In May, Dmitry Bivol of Russia upset Álvarez in a light-heavyweight matchup, handing Álvarez, just the second loss of his professional career.

All which makes tonight’s fight, between Álvarez and Gennadiy Golovkin in Las Vegas, all the more crucial for Álvarez. The Mexican boxer is already one of the most influential fighters of the 21st century. In 2018, he inked staggering 11-fight, $365 million fight deal with DAZN, a new sports media entity that had just launched. Álvarez, who hails from Mexico, trains in Southern California and has homes in both San Diego and Guadalajara, is popular throughout North America. Although his original DAZN deal fell through, Álvarez, 32, re-upped with DAZN for a lucrative two-fight deal in February.

“This fight is very important for my career,” Álvarez told TIME in a pre-fight interview. “Golovkin is a great fighter with a lot of accomplishments. This fight is important for my legacy, to be remembered as one of the greatest fighters in boxing history.”

These two fighters share a history. In 2017, they met for the first time in the ring, and the bout ended in a controversial

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez dominated Gennady Golovkin over 12 rounds to retain his undisputed super-middleweight crown.

It was the third encounter in Las Vegas between the modern-day greats with Alvarez claiming a second win following a controversial draw in the first bout.

After sidestepping a fightback from Golovkin in the later rounds, all three judges were in agreement, scoring it 116-112, 115-113, 115-113 for Alvarez.

“Thank you my friend, we gave the fans three great fights,” said the Mexican.

They shared a warm embrace after the fight, despite their rivalry turning sour in the four-year wait for the trilogy encounter, which saw Alvarez retain the IBF, WBA (Super), WBO and WBC titles.

Golovkin said: “I want to shake hands with Canelo. Congrats to all his team. He’s a real warrior – if you don’t understand that, you don’t understand nothing.”

Thrilling trilogy ends with a whimper

Despite a bitter build-up, the final chapter did not have the same bite as the contests in 2017 and 2018.

Alvarez, 32, took control from the first round, dominating an unusually passive Golovkin.

Golovkin was happy to “see the rounds slip away”, as Steve Bunce on BBC Radio 5 Live commentary put it, and at the halfway point the unified middleweight champion was experiencing a shutout.

Alvarez is back to winning ways after a loss in his last fight

Although showing no signs of hurting Golovkin, Alvarez set the pace and was particularly successful with his left hook.

Golovkin could not respond when Alvarez did land and after the eighth round the Kazakh’s trainer Johnathan Banks tried to rally his fighter, telling him “let’s go to work”.

The 40-year-old tried to do just that and staged a fightback from the ninth round onwards, his famous stiff jab finally clicking into gear, troubling Alvarez and pushing him back.

Alvarez, however, while visibly tiring, was never hurt and going into the final round Golovkin was searching for what would have been the 38th knockout of a long career.

The T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas had been an unhappy hunting ground for Golovkin, losing the rematch to Alvarez there in 2018 and being robbed of what many felt was a superb win in their first fight in 2017.

And it was to be another frustrating night for Golovkin, who lost for just the second time in his illustrious 45-fight career.

“Probably it was a tactical mistake on my part to start so slow,” Golvkin said after the fight. “My reconnaissance went on too long.

“There was a plan to bring Canelo closer to open him up to try and do what I wanted to do. It’s just I started late and I did not have enough time to fulfil my game plan.”

I’ve always said that I did not feel any animosity in this rivalry – he was the one who said it was personal. After the
