Canelo Alvarez’s next fight opponent announced in undisputed title boost for Terence Crawford showdown

Canelo Alvarez is now set to fight for a chance to regain his undisputed super-middleweight titles in May.

A huge saga has surrounded the Mexican this week, with reports first indicating that his mega-fight with Terence Crawford was complete.

It was then claimed that the pound-for-pound superstar would no longer face ‘Bud’, and was instead pursuing a deal to face YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul on ‘Cinco De Mayo’ weekend.

But Saudi boxing chief Turki Alalshikh intervened to stop the fight from happening, and a deal collapsed.

Alvarez instead inked a four-fight deal with Alalshikh, which includes a bout in May before his showdown with Crawford in September which had been revived.

Jermall Charlo and Bruno Sarace were lined up as two potential rivals for the May bout, which is expected to take place in Saudi Arabia.

But it has now emerged that Alvarez, who holds the WBC, WBA and WBO belts, will instead face current IBF world super-middleweight champion William Scull in his return.

Scull was recently crowned the IBF king after Alvarez vacated the belt, which saw him fight and beat Vladimir Shiskhin in October.

Alvarez previously elected not to take on the undefeated Cuban, to focus on potential bigger names and vacated his title.

But now he will take on his fellow 168lbs champion for a chance to become a two-time undisputed king of the division.

Alalshikh announced the news on social media, writing: “The legend Saul Alvarez Canelo will fight William Scull in undisputed fight in Riyadh on the 3rd of May.

“If he wins the fight in September, it will see him be undisputed again.”

Canelo Alvarez on course for Terence Crawford super-fight in September amid Jake Paul claims

Canelo Alvarez on course for Terence Crawford super-fight in September amid Jake Paul claims

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez has paved the way for a super-fight against Terence Crawford after signing a multi-fight deal with Turki Alalshikh, despite a sensational clash with Jake Paul being under consideration.

The deal is for four fights, with the first set for Saudi Arabia in May and including a September showdown with Terence Crawford, potentially in Las Vegas.

“Canelo in Riyadh in May. The big fight [against Crawford] in September then two more fights in ’26. Don’t mess with the lion,” Alalshikh, who heads Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority, said in a social media post.

Alvarez posted: “Let’s go brother.”

Canelo had appeared to be actively considering meeting social media influencer turned fighter Paul in a boxing event. Paul fuelled that expectation when he posted: “A-Side in every fight I’ve been in and that’s not changing for this one.”

It later emerged that talks for Canelo boxing Paul in Las Vegas in May had reached an advanced stage before being discontinued.

Paul’s company MVP Promotions issued a statement saying: “MVP was deep in negotiations for a blockbuster fight between Jake Paul and Canelo Alvarez on Cinco de Mayo weekend in Las Vegas, a massive event for the Mexican, Puerto Rican and American fans, and it’s disappointing to see how the situation unfolded. MVP operates with integrity, transparency, and respect for the sport, its athletes, and the fans.

“We remain in active discussions with multiple high-profile opponents and are committed to delivering the biggest fights, the most exciting events, and to working with partners who share our values and our commitment to boxing and its fighters.

“Jake Paul isn’t going anywhere, and neither is MVP. We’ll continue to disrupt boxing, on our terms.”

Paul vented his frustration on social media: “Canelo Alvarez ducked me,” he claimed in a post.

“I’m the new face of boxing. You cannot have the biggest fight of 2025 without my name involved. When all of your events tank and lose money you will all realise who the king of the sport is.”

Paul is a licenced professional boxer but he has never fought at championship level. He lost an eight-round split decision to Tommy Fury, the brother of Tyson Fury, as well as boxing MMA fighters, like Anderson Silva and Nate Diaz.

Sean Brady’s perfect record was destroyed when Belal Muhammad unleashed ‘Canelo hands’ to score shock KO

Sean Brady’s perfect record was destroyed when Belal Muhammad unleashed ‘Canelo hands’ to score shock KO

Fight fans got a first look at Belal Muhammad’s ‘Canelo hands’ at UFC 280 in October 2022.

The UFC welterweight champion, who is known for his elite-level wrestling ability, was mocked after his trainer compared him to boxing icon Canelo Alvarez.

Rather than shying away from the jokes, ‘Remember The Name’ has leaned into them and doubled down by claiming he’s the ‘best striker in the welterweight division‘.

Belal Muhammad has never scored a knockdown inside the Octagon, but Sean Brady knows that he packs a punch after being stopped by a barrage of strikes during the American’s rise through the ranks.

Belal Muhammad vs Sean Brady revisted

Brady entered UFC 280 as the favorite after amassing a 15-0 record that suggested he was the next big thing.

As is often the case when two wrestlers clash, Brady’s fight with Muhammad was contested on the feet.

In round two, a massive overhand rocked the undefeated prospect and signaled the beginning of the end.

Muhammad unloaded a barrage of punches but was unable to knock the Philadelphian off his feet.

Still, referee Lukasz Bosacki stepped when Brady ate dozens of punc

‘Canelo hands’… Belal Muhammad promises no takedowns as he makes bold prediction ahead of UFC 315

Belal Muhammad is adamant he will replicate Canelo Alvarez, when he goes head-to-head with Jack Della Maddalena.

‘Remember the Name’ is set to attempt to make the first defense of his throne at UFC 315, inside the Bell Centre, Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

However, while many expect the American-Palestinian to take a grappling heavy approach, he denies this will be his method to victory.

Instead, the 36-year-old is adamant that he will outstrike his Australian foe.

Turki: Eubank Jr vs Benn winner to fight Canelo

Turki: Eubank Jr vs Benn winner to fight Canelo

A shot at pound-for-pound great Canelo Alvarez is on the line when Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn fight at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium later this spring, says Turki Alalshikh.

Eubank Jr and Benn, the sons of historic rivals Chris Eubank and Nigel Benn, begin their press tour this week after striking an agreement to settle their long-running feud in the ring on April 26.

The pair had originally been due to face off in October 2022 before that fight was cancelled when Benn failed two drug tests.

It now beckons as another defining night in the career of both as they continue their hunt for world title opportunities.

“Whoever is the winner we are working in the future to have him fight against Canelo,” Alalshikh, Chairman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority, told Sky Sports.

Chris Eubank Jr says his clash against Conor Benn will be ‘savage’ and admits the history behind their rivalry means there’s so much on the line

Eubank Jr has openly called out Alvarez in the past, notably criticising Jermell Charlo’s performance in his unanimous decision loss to the 34-year-old in October 2023 while insisting the Mexican needs to face an opponent who wants to win.

Beat Benn, and the chance to prove as much could be his.

“If Eubank wins, he will have the chance to do Canelo at the beginning of 2026,” Alalshikh continued.

“We have two big conferences, one in Manchester on Tuesday, and one in London on Thursday, it will be huge.

“And I think it will be a great fight. And also the undercard is strong. The result of this fight and the undercard will impact the future of our cards.”

Alvarez is the reigning WBA, WBC and WBO super-middleweight champion after beating Edgar Berlanga via unanimous decision last September to lift his glittering professional record to 62-2-2. The Mexican icon was also recently subject to reports pointing towards a mega-fight later this year against Terence Crawford, the first man to be an undisputed champion in two weight classes in the four-belt era.
