Canelo Alvarez will no longer be boxing Jake Paul as the bout fizzled just as the fight was close to happening.

It was reported on February 6 that Alvarez and Paul were closing in on a fight that would see them box on Cinco de Mayo weekend in Las Vegas with the event aired on Netflix. His so-called “hit list” included the names of Canelo Alvarez (for a rematch), Jaime Munguia, Jermall Charlo, Caleb Plant, Hamzah Sheeraz, and Diego Pacheco. Berlanga’s goal? To bounce back from his loss to Canelo and make a statement in the super middleweight division. However, in a recent update, it has been confirmed that Berlanga will not be facing any of the fighters he had initially called out. Instead, he is set to fight the unbeaten Jonathan Gonzalez Ortiz on the undercard of Austin Williams vs. Patrice Volny on March 15, at Caribe Royale Orlando in Orlando, Florida. The announcement didn’t sit well with everyone—especially Caleb Plant, who has been on Berlanga’s radar for some time.

Caleb Plant and Edgar Berlanga have been involved in a long-running rivalry that peaked when Berlanga, a hot prospect, was set to face Canelo Alvarez last year. At that time, Plant had expressed interest in facing ‘The Chosen One.‘ On the undercard, where Canelo defeated Berlanga and Plant secured a knockout victory over Trevor McCumby. Plant emerged as the Interim WBA Super Middleweight champion with the victory. Now, with the tables turned, the 32-year-old decided to mock the 22-1 boxer, adding more fuel to their ongoing rivalry.

The failed negotiations have led to a heated exchange between the two fighters on social media.

Jake Paul is weighing his next options after Canelo Alvarez pulled out of their potential May 3rd fight. Earlier this year, discussions were underway for the bout to be broadcast on Netflix, but Canelo signed a lucrative four-fight deal with Riyadh Season, positioning him for a clash with Terence Crawford in September. As part of his Saudi deal, Canelo is now set to fight William Scull on May 3rd.

While a fight between Paul and Canelo isn’t entirely ruled out, Floyd Mayweather’s uncle, Jeff Mayweather, believes it won’t happen anytime soon. In a recent interview with The Mayweather Channel, the renowned trainer discussed who Canelo is likely to face before considering a matchup with someone like Paul.

Don’t expect Dana White to act all that surprised that Turki Alalshikh struck a deal to sign Canelo Alvarez to a multi-fight deal that ultimately stole him away from a potential showdown against Jake Paul.

It was a rollercoaster ride on Friday when it appeared Canelo was just moments away from inking a contract to face Paul in a boxing match that would have aired on Netflix in May. Paul fought Mike Tyson in a similar event this past November with more than 100 million viewers tuning into watch the show.

Paul obviously hoped he could duplicate or even surpass those numbers, but Canelo ultimately ended up signing a four-fight deal with Riyadh Season instead, which is run by Alalshikh as the chairman of the General Entertainment Authority in Saudi Arabia.
