Mexican boxer Canelo Alvarez apologized for publicly threatening Lionel Messi after he took offense to a dressing-room video that appeared to show the Argentine striker nudging away a Mexican jersey on the floor with his foot.
Messi scored in Argentina’s 2-0 victory over Mexico at the world cup on Saturday and Alvarez, who has 2.2 million followers on Twitter, said that the striker “should ask God that I don’t find him” having taken offense at the video.
On Wednesday, however, Alvarez tweeted that he got carried away and apologized to Messi and the people of Argentina.
The rising soccer fever stemming from the FIFA World Cub 2022, also saw a lot of drama revolving around it. And the recent Mexico vs Argentina match was a testament to the same. Last Saturday, Argentina beat Mexico 2-0 in their Group C match at the world cup. One of those goals were scored by Lionel Messi, who then drew some controversy soon after for his post-game celebration.
In a clip that has since gone viral, the football superstar was being accused of kicking a Mexico jersey and jumping on it as he celebrated.
It all looked like unnecessary drama, as Messi didn’t step on the Jersey, and seemingly only unintentionally hit it a little as he was removing his shoe. That didn’t stop a lot of people from getting very angry and irrational though, including a certain boxing superstar from Mexico.

The video shared on social media showed Messi seemingly touch the Mexican jersey with his foot while he and his teammates jumped up and down in their changing room following Saturday’s 2-0 win.
“Did you see Messi cleaning the changing room with our jersey and flag????” wrote Mexican Alvarez, a four-weight champion boxer, on Twitter.
