Canelo Alvarez makes Gennadiy Golovkin look his age, wins trilogy by unanimous decision

Canelo Alvarez makes Gennadiy Golovkin look his age, wins trilogy by unanimous decision

Rounds 25 through 36 looked nothing like one to 24.

Canelo Alvarez, who received all his could handle in two previous fights with Gennadiy Golovkin, made Triple-G look all of his 40 years for most of the fight en route to winning a unanimous decision at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

The bizarre scores were 116-112, 115-113 and 115-113, which didn’t reflect what happened in the ring. Boxing Junkie scored it 119-111 for Alvarez, 11 rounds to one.

Golovkin (42-2-1, 37 KOs) was a significant underdog for a reason, and not just because he’s eight years older than his prime rival. The Kazakhstani fighter also moved up from 160 pounds to 168 to face a pound-for-pound great.

Thus, the result was predicta

Read on if you want to know how to live stream Canelo vs Golovkin 3 online from anywhere.

The two bitter rivals played out a draw in their first meeting back in 2017 – a judges verdict that many boxing fans felt should have gone in Kazakh star Golovkin’s favour.

Canelo vs Golovkin 3 at a glance

This title fight takes place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday, September 17.

Canelo and Golovkins ring walks are expected around 11pm ET / 8pm PT / 4am BST / 1pm AEST.

Canelo then scored a majority decision in their second showdown the following year,  a similarly contentious decision, with many fight fans feeling GGG had done enough to at least secure a draw or better.

Mexican star Canelo will be putting his super middleweight titles on the line for this fight, meaning Golovkin moves up a weight for the first time in his career.

Canelo, 32 suffered just the second defeat of his illustrious career in his last appearance in the ring back in May, after making an unsuccessful weight switch to 175lb back in May against Dmitry Bivol, while Golovkin’s last fight was a TKO victory in Japan over Ryota Murata back in April.

This entire event is available exclusively on DAZN, excluding Mexico. However, depending on where you live that will mean a different viewing time and cost to watch. Read on to see how to watch Canelo vs Golovkin 3 online.

Canelo reveals he went into Golovkin fight injured

Canelo Alvarez has revealed he went into Saturday night’s fight with Gennadiy Golovkin carrying an injury.

The Mexican superstar has torn the cartilage in the wrist of his left hand and he admitted the pain it caused him was “really bad”.

“It hurts everywhere. I had these issues since the Caleb Plant fight. I was like it’s okay, it’s okay, later, later, then it started [to get] really bad. I need surgery,” Alvarez said.

Despite the injury he roundly outboxed Golovkin over 12 rounds to bring an end to their rivalry, win a unanimous decision and defend his unified WBC, IBF, WBA and WBO super-middleweight titles.

“With my hand problems I outjabbed the best jabber in the world in Gennadiy Golovkin,” Alvarez said.

“I think towards the end of the fight I obviously started to get a bit fatigued and that’s because we’ve not been able to work explosively in the gym. But despite all the problems that we’ve had, I was really happy with my performance tonight,” he added.

“I wanted to get that KO but it didn’t come because he’s a great fighter. That’s why there are 12 round

Canelo Alvarez Punches Through GGG and Into Boxing History

Canelo Alvarez Punches Through GGG and Into Boxing History

As much as the boxers themselves, boxing trilogies have long helped frame the epochs of their sport. Rubber matches such as Ali vs. Frazier, Ali vs. Norton, Patterson vs. Johansson, Zale vs. Graziano, and other triptychs determined who was the better of two evenly matched masters of the noble art.

Last night at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, we witnessed a punctuating moment in pugilistic history, when Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (42-1-2, 37 knockouts) and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (58-2-2, 39 knockouts) clashed for the third time, with Alvarez defending his undisputed super-middleweight title.

In September 2017, Alvarez eked out—or perhaps it would be more apt to say, “was gifted with”—a draw. A year later, Alvarez made adjustments and improved but only enough to come away with a hotly contested split decision victory.

Given the astronomical pay-per-view numbers and the high quality of the two fights, it would have been logical for promoters to arrange a third deciding contest immediately. Then again, logic and boxing have not always been good partners.

The boxing public has had to wait four years for these consummate artists of violence to reunite under the klieg lights. As it became evident this evening, the delay was more of a liver shot to the 40-year-old Golovkin than it was to the 32-year-old Alvarez.

Golovkin returned the sentiments to Álvarez.

“Everybody knows this is high level, the best fight for boxing,” Golovkin said. “Look at his face. Look at my face. It’s high level, because we trained well, and this shows that we did a very good fight, very good quality.”
