Canelo Alvarez has had a bit of an opponent shake-up, and will now be facing Jermell Charlo in September.
The Mexican superstar is fresh off his return opposite John Ryder in May. That bout was a return in more ways than one for Canelo Alvarez, as it was his first bout in Mexico in over a decade. In front of his home fans, the super-middleweight champion didn’t disappoint, defeating ‘The Gorilla’ by decision.
Following the victory, Canelo Alvarez called for a rematch with Dmitry Bivol. The two previously faced off last May, with the light-heavyweight champion scoring an upset decision win. With that in mind, Dmitry Bivol declined the rematch, especially after his foe’s team declined to raise his purse for the rematch.
Australian boxer Tim Tszyu’s slated mega-fight with Jermell Charlo is officially off after the American opted to take on Mexican superstar Canelo Álvarez instead.
Charlo will move up two divisions to fight Álvarez for the undisputed super-middleweight crown in Las Vegas on 30 September.
That date is precisely the deadline the WBO had imposed for Tszyu and Charlo to square off for all four super-welterweight belts.
Tszyu and Charlo had initially been scheduled to fight on 29 January before Charlo reported two broken bones in his left hand last Christmas.
With Charlo moving up to challenge the so-called face of boxing, the WBO is expected to elevate the undefeated Tszyu from interim to full world champion.
But Saturday’s shock revelation is still a hammer blow to the Australian.
Tszyu had retained the interim title with a specta
Canelo Alvarez evidently is going to fight Charlo in September. Only it’s not the Charlo it was reported to be.
The undisputed 168-pound champion indicated on social media that he is going to face undisputed 154-pound champ Jermell Charlo, not his twin brother and 160-pound titleholder Jermall Charlo. And sources have confirmed the news.
Alvarez’s first fight with Premier Boxing Champions will take place on Sept. 30 in Las Vegas, he said on Twitter.
“Undisputed vs. Undisputed,” was how he billed the matchup.
Alvarez (59-2-2, 39 KOs) recently signed what is believed to be a three-fight contract with PBC, which manages a number of the top fighters in and around the Mexican star’s division.
Canelo Alvaez will now face Jermell Charlo — the twin brother of Jermall Charlo — on Sept. 30 in Las Vegas.
Alvarez announced the new matchup Friday on his social media accounts. The 32-year-old multi-belt champion was expected to face Jermall Charlo, but instead pivoted to meet Jermell Charlo, the undisputed super

Canelo Alvarez will face Jermall Charlo in the first of a three-fight deal Alvarez signed with PBC. The fight is targeted to be held in September and broadcast on Showtime PPV.
Charlo (32-0, 22 KOs) is the WBC middleweight champion, but he hasn’t fought since a decision victory over Juan Macias Montiel in June 2021. He’ll move up in weight to challenge Alvarez for his undisputed super middleweight championship.
Alvarez (59-2-2, 39 KOs), who defended his titles with a decision over John Ryder in Guadalajara, Mexico, in May, had said he wanted a rematch against Dmitry Bivol, who handed him the second loss of his career in May 2022 in a light heavyweight bout. Boxing fans have wanted Alvarez to face WBC interim champion David Benavidez, but Charlo got the chance.
How does Alvarez defeat a top fighter like Charlo? Can Charlo upset Alvarez after his long layoff? Is Benavidez next for Alvarez if he wins? How about a fight against Errol Spence Jr.?
Mike Coppinger and Ben Baby explain what the deal means, the chances for both fighters and what the future would hold if Alvarez wins.
Is Charlo the best option for Canelo for this fight? Why is he taking it?
Charlo makes sense for Alvarez’s second fight this year. The twin brother of junior middleweight undisputed champion Jermell Charlo, Jermall was one of two finalists for the Canelo sweepstakes over two years ago before boxing’s top star elected to face Bivol.
Bivol routed Alvarez. Charlo, meanwhile, hasn’t competed in two years, when he struggled with Juan Macias Montiel. Between the inactivity and Charlo’s personal
Super-middleweight boxing champion Canelo Alvarez is set to face Jermall Charlo on September 16th.
The Mexican superstar has been out of the ring since his May return against John Ryder. That was a return in more than one way for Canelo Alvarez, as it was his first bout in Mexico in over a decade. He didn’t disappoint fans, as he dominated ‘The Gorilla’ en route to a unanimous decision win.
Following the victory, the unified super-middleweight champion called out Dmitry Bivol. The two previously faced off last May, when Canelo Alvarez returned to light-heavyweight. Despite entering the fight a massive underdog, the Russian dominated, winning by unanimous decision. In recent weeks, Bivol has been less than thrilled at the prospect of a rematch, instead targeting Artur Beterbiev.
Canelo Alvarez clearly wanted some R&R before returning to the ring in September, so the boxing superstar grabbed his beautiful wife and darted off for a romantic vacation in Portofino, where the smoke show couple were seen packing on the PDA! 🔥
32-year-old Canelo and 26-year-old wife Fernanda Gomez were photographed in Italy Sunday afternoon, Father’s Day, enjoying the European holiday … where they shopped in several luxury stores, including Dolce & Gabbana.
Alvarez and Gomez, who married in May 2021 (just a few days after Canelo broke Billy Joe Saunders‘ face in their fight), were seen kissing and holding hands in between the retail therapy.
Portofino, located in Genoa on the Italian Riviera, is a hot spot for some of the richest and most successful people from Europe and America.
In the realm of boxing, there are very few events that capture the attention of the entire world quite like a highly anticipated ‘super fight.’ One such historic clash was unveiled on September 14, 2013, when Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Canelo Álvarez stepped into the ring for an electrifying showdown dubbed “The One.” When the dust settled, Mayweather emerged victorious, securing a hard-fought majority decision in what was a 12-round ‘battle of Greats.’
Over the years, many boxing and MMA icons have given their two cents on the bout. At times, UFC commentator Joe Rogan has also chimed in with his unique remarks on the duo. Recently, Canelo became the center of a captivating discussion on “The Joe Rogan Experience,” a platform known for celebrating the stories of exceptional fighters.

Coming off his first fight of 2023, Canelo Alvarez is already starting to his eye his next potential opponent and is targeting Jermall Charlo and Badou Jack, according to ESPN’s Mike Coppinger.
Alvarez, 32, defeated John Ryder on May 6 in Mexico via unanimous decision. He and his trainer/manager, Eddy Reynoso, met with PBC founder Al Haymon in Cleveland, the two sides discussed a possible fight with Charlo, per Coppinger’s sources.
The undisputed super middleweight champion has also been in talks with Jack’s manager, Amer Abdallah.
In the past, Alvarez has been adamant about wanting a rematch against Dmitry Bivol in September. Bivol handed Alvarez his first defeat in nearly nine years in May 2022.
But now it looks like the target may be changing for him.
Charlo, 33, would be coming off a very long layoff to fac
