Last Saturday, Argentina beat Mexico 2-0 in their Group C match at the world cup. One of those goals were scored by Lionel Messi, who then drew some controversy soon after for his post-game celebration.

In a clip that has since gone viral, the football superstar was being accused of kicking a Mexico jersey and jumping on it as he celebrated.

It all looked like unnecessary drama, as Messi didn’t step on the Jersey, and seemingly only unintentionally hit it a little as he was removing his shoe. That didn’t stop a lot of people from getting very angry and irrational though, including a certain boxing superstar from Mexico.

DOHA (AFP) — Champion boxer Saul “Canelo” Alvarez issued a warning to Lionel Messi after a video emerged of the star celebrating Argentina’s world cup win over Mexico with a Mexican jersey on the floor.

The video shared on social media showed Messi seemingly touch the Mexican jersey with his foot while he and his teammates jumped up and down in their changing room following Saturday’s 2-0 win.

“Did you see Messi cleaning the changing room with our jersey and flag????” wrote Mexican Alvarez, a four-weight champion boxer, on Twitter.

The Argentina star may have gotten into trouble with the wrong person after moving the Mexican national team jersey with his foot while celebrating his team’s much-needed World Cup win against Mexico on Saturday.

The Mexican boxer said on Twitter that Messi “was cleaning the floor” with the Mexican shirt. He said it was a disrespectful attitude by the Argentina star toward the Mexicans.

Britain’s Chantelle Cameron took a clear unanimous decision to beat Jessica McCaskill and become the undisputed super-lightweight champion on Saturday.

At the Eithad Arena in Abu Dhabi, Cameron outboxed her American opponent over 10 rounds, to win 97-93, 96-94 and 96-94 on the judges’ scorecards.

Following on from his suprise win over Canelo in May, Dmitry Bivol seeks to cement his place as one of the top fighters in boxing today by beating dangerous challenger Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez.

Bivol (20-0, 11 KOs) had till that point amassed a professional resume that was impressive, but not outstanding, before launching himself into the stratosphere with that victory. Zurdo (44-0-0, 30 KOs) is currently in pretty much the position Bivol was then, and the dangerous, hard-punching challenger will be looking to grab the chance to prove himself with everything he’s got. Bivol is going to be favoured, but expect a tough test.

The worry was Bivol would respond to Zurdo’s size by playing keep-away, but he’s not so far. Starts to get a few right hands in as the round goes no, but he takes a couple solid ones back. They spring to life and exchange in the last few seconds, Bivol winning that. 10-9 Bivol

Round 2: Zurdo trying to use his height and length to punch over Bivol’s jab. It works once but Bivol’s too sharp to let that be a route consistently. The 1-2 with the 2 to the body is working for him though, and he follows up by catching him solidly upstairs. Bivol responds with a quick combo that snaps Zurdo’s head back. Bivol pushing forward now, he evidently wants to take Zurdo’s length away. Again they end the round exchanging, and the difference in these moments is definitely that Bivol’s defence is the better. 10-9 Bivol, 20-18

Round 3: Zurdo working that 1-2 again, but Bivol’s already got him leaning too far to get it home and counters. This isn’t a schooling just yet, but we’re starting to see a level difference. Zurdo pushes forward and does catch him, but once again he’s leaning too far and gets countered. Zurdo

Dmitry Bivol follows up his unexpected, brilliant, win over Saul Alvarez in May by travelling to Dubai for a showdown against another high-profile Mexican, unbeaten Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez. Ramirez hasn’t fought anyone in nearly this class before, but then, the same could be said of Bivol when he stepped up in May, so this looks to be an interesting test for both men.

Bivol is, of course, on a high right now. He was champion already when he fought Canelo, but he went overnight from ‘beltholder’, proven but not proven so to speak, to the man in the division, the one with a target on his back. He also went from someone seen as solid-but-unspectacular to proving himself a masterful boxer, with a set of skills he’d mostly just been hiding till he needed it.

First to step up to the plate is Zurdo Ramirez, a 31-year-old Mexican who’s fun to watch and comes with an impressive looking 44-0 record but has been pretty much marking time waiting for the big fight for years. His resume’s not terrible, he’s fought some solid opponents and even when keeping busy rarely takes complete mismatches, which some of his contemporaries are guilty of. But there’s a decent argument to make that the last time he fought someone genuinely proven at world level without being well past his best was Arthur Abraham, six years ago and a division below. And even Abraham was 36 at the time. There’s definitely been a sense of keeping his powder dry and his 0 safe for the big cash-in. Canelo never materialized for him, but if he can beat Bivol he definitely strengthens both his case for getting that fight someday and his overall future paydays, so here we go.
