Canelo Alvarez Defeats John Ryder by Decision in Super Middleweight Title Fight

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez made a successful return to Mexico with a unanimous decision win over John Ryder from Estadio Akron in Guadalajara. Alvarez retained his WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, WBO, and The Ring super middleweight titles.

Canelo wasted no time setting the tone early in front of a raucous Mexican crowd. He landed some good body shots in the opening round, and Ryder didn’t offer much resistance.

It didn’t take long for Ryder to start donning the crimson mask. Canelo opened up a cut on his opponent’s nose in the third round as the superstar continued to build a massive lead.

A firm one-two combination put Ryder down in the fifth round. The Brit showed some heart by getting up and continuing to fight, but it only served to show the difference in skill between the two.

Round 1: Lots of movement and feinting to start, neither man wants to make a mistake. Canelo striking first with punches from range. There’s a right to the body for the champion. Ryder pushes Canelo to the ropes and is looking for an opening to land body shots, but Canelo’s defense is tight. Canelo with a methodical approach as he picks his spots.

Round 2: Canelo starts the second with a few steady jabs. He hits Ryder with a couple of punches to the body. Ryder just not doing much of anything so far. There’s a jab from Ryder, but Canelo controlling the pace right now. Canelo narrowly misses on a right hand. Ryder struggling to get past Canelo’s guard. Hard body shot by Canelo. Jab by Canelo. There’s a quick right hook to the body for Ryder. Ryder fires but again his shots are deflected. Canelo scores with a left to the body.

Round 3: Big right hand connects for Canelo, hardest shot of the fight so far. Looks like that has Ryder bleeding. Canelo rips a couple of stiff punches to the body. Ryder attacks the body, but he’s a step slow. Canelo starting to throw the straight right. He connects with it off of couple of jabs. Ryder looking to counter. He hits Canelo to the body. Canelo backs him up to the ropes and lets a couple of right hands fly. Ryder blocks them, but the impact was still felt.

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez proved once again why many believe he is the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, defeating John Ryder with a one-sided unanimous decision (120-107, 118-109 x2).

Alvarez had hinted at retirement with a loss to Ryder, but the Guadalajara, Mexico, crowd’s reaction revealed anything but skepticism.

It was mastery at its finest from a champion with a lot to prove, and for some, to add to a fitting chapter in a legendary career.

The fight, which aired on DAZN, went as many oddsmakers predicted it. Alvarez, who lost on Cinco De Mayo weekend in 2022, had little to no trouble with the skilled and experienced Ryder. Canelo Álvarez has a fight with John Ryder coming up in less than a month, but he already knows who he wants next.

Álvarez said he is determined to have a rematch against Dmitry Bivol later this year.

“Everybody knows I want that rematch with Bivol,” Alvarez told TMZ Sports. “That’s my goal this year. We’ll see, but that’s my goal this year.”

Bivol dominated Álvarez in a unanimous-decision victory at light heavyweight last May. Many expected Álvarez to breeze right past Bivol and capture the WBA championship, but instead, the jump from super middleweight to light heavyweight proved daunting.

While there has been some speculation a rematch would happen at 168 pounds, Álvarez has made it clear in no uncertain terms he needs to prove himself at light heavyweight.
