Undisputed super-middleweight champion Saul Canelo Alvarez will defend his world titles against British challenger John Ryder on May 6.

Canelo Alvarez vs. John Ryder live fight updates, results, highlights from 2023 boxing fight

Undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez had a successful homecoming as he dominated John Ryder to earn a unanimous decision victory and retain his titles at Estadio Akron in Guadalajara.

It wasn’t the knockout that the 50,000-plus fans wanted to see from their hero — who returned to fight in Mexico for the first time in over a decade — but it wasn’t remotely close as the judges saw it with scores of 120-107 and 118-109 twice.

Canelo scored a knockdown in round five and appeared to be on the verge of getting the stoppage, but Ryder refused to back down and allow the Mexican superstar to get what he wanted. Instead, Canelo used a strong body attack and a stiff jab to give Ryder problems throughout the fight. Ryder turned in a valiant effort in defeat as he can take home a moral victory by not allowing the champion to get the finish he desired.

After an epic entrance that included a Mariachi band of over 150 members, Canelo aimed to prove that he should still be recognized as the best fighter in the world as he campaigns for a rematch with Dmitry Bivol at light heavyweight.

However, there will be some questions considering that Canelo was unable to finish Ryder as there are concerns that we may be seeing the 32-year-old on the downslope of his career.

“He’s a very strong fighter,” Canelo said of Ryder. “It was more difficult than usual. I’ve been in this position for a long time and I know my opponents are coming for everything…I’m happy with the fight.”

Canelo never stopped applying pressure from the opening bell and was clearly unconcerned with what Ryder offered offensively. It took a few rounds for Canelo to feel comfortable firing his surgically repaired left hand but he eventually got to that point and used it to pop an effective jab.

Ryder was unable to find openings and wasn’t strong enough to back Canelo off of him during the early stages. Eventually, the pressure got to Ryder as Canelo smashed him with a right hand that appeared to break the Brit’s nose.

Canelo smelled blood and landed a hard right hand that sent Ryder down to the canvas in the fifth round. For a moment, it appeared that the visitor wouldn’t beat the count but he eventually made it to his feet. Showing true grit, Ryder would fight back and not allow Canelo to take him out of the fight.

Nevertheless, Alvarez was dominant throughout and repeatedly landed left hooks to the body and a strong jab. A restless crowd wanted a finish in the final round and Canelo sought to oblige. But Ryder retaliated and produced some solid work during the championship rounds that allowed him to see the final bell.

With his 168-pound titles secure, Canelo made it clear what he wants next.

“Everybody knows we want Bivol,” Canelo said when asked about fights with either Bivol or WBC interim super middleweight champion David Benavidez. “If the fight with Bivol doesn’t happen, we’ll see. (I want Bivol) Same rules, same terms, same everything.”

Here’s how it all went down in Mexico.

Canelo Alvarez vs. John Ryder as it happened

Canelo Alvarez bt John Ryder by UD (120-107, 118-109, 118-109)

That was a formality on the cards in the end. Ryder was incredibly brave and even had some late success, but Canelo was a clear winner. How much that means for a potential rematch with Dmitry Bivol or a showdown with David Benavidez is up for debate.

Round 12: Ryder charges in and Canelo backs him off with a right hand. Canelo lands a pair of jabs but Ryder isn’t going to back off. They bang on the inside and Canelo keeps pressing forward. Ryder won’t give Canelo what he wants and lands a right hand. Canelo clearly wants to knock him out but Ryder won’t go away. Ryder bulls forward and bangs to the body and head. Good round for Ryder, who had a much better second half. He also won the round.

SN Unofficial Scorecard: 10-9 Ryder (119-108 Canelo)

Round 11: Canelo sneaks another right hand in there and another to the body. Ryder is pesky and keeps fighting back. Ryder seems more energized than he was earlier. Left hand by Canelo and a straight right behind it. Ryder lands a left hand down the middle. Another left to the body and a right from Canelo as he is back to applying pressure. Jabs and a right hand from Canelo land. Ryder makes it out of the round and it feels like he could make the final bell in a losing effort.

SN Unofficial Scorecard: 10-9 Canelo (110-98 Canelo)

Round 10: Canelo steps in behind a jab and lands a hook. Hard right hand from Ryder lands. He won’t go away even if he’s losing. Pair of jabs from Canelo land but Ryder is still fighting. Canelo with a one, two but Ryder fires back. Big right hand from Canelo and Ryder takes it well.

SN Unofficial Scorecard: 10-9 Canelo (100-89 Canelo)

Round Nine: Uppercut to the body by Canelo as Ryder lets his hands go a bit and lands a right hand to the head. Ryder landing on the inside but Canelo continues to land the jab. Ryder digs to the body and lands a right over the top. Big right hand by Canelo rocks Ryder but Ryder i

“Blood on the Camera, Damn”: Boxer Suffering Nasty Cut on Canelo vs. Ryder Undercard Sends Fans in Frenzy

The long-awaited fight between Canelo Alvarez and John Ryder is finally at hand today as the duo is all set to face one another in the ring. The fight is taking place in Guadalajara, Mexico and the stadium is set to have enough capacity to welcome 50,000 spectators. The first fight of the main card between Oleksandr Gvozdyk and Ricards Bolotniks ended, leaving Bolotnik on his knees as the referee intervened to stop the fight.

Gvozdyk took a different approach to this fight that even left the boxing commentators confused. For the first five rounds of the match, he appeared out of his element. However, it seemed like a switch turned on as the sixth round began. Gvozdyk started to pick up and land power shots. He soon brought the Latvian fighter to his knees with a nasty cut above his brow. Bolotniks was able to stand up before the counts ended, but referee Celestino Ruiz stopped the fight and sealed the result of Gvozdyk’s victory via TKO.

Even though during the opening rounds Gvozdyk threw ineffective punches, Bolotniks was able to land some effective shots. Fans were unable to suppress their excitement and took to Twitter to share their responses to the fight.

Boxing World in Disbelief Over Reported Canelo Alvarez vs. John Ryder PPV Sales

Boxing World in Disbelief Over Reported Canelo Alvarez vs. John Ryder PPV Sales

Recently, there has been a hot debate that is going around on the question- Who is the ‘face of boxing’ now? Many believe Canelo Alvarez holds that mantle but this question has had people divided as some believe Gervonta Davis to be the ‘face of boxing’. This all started when after beating Ryan Garcia, ‘Tank’ was asked if he believes that he is the ‘face of boxing’ now, and ‘Tank’ replied, “Abso-f—ing-lutely”. However, prior to his fight against John Ryder, Alvarez chose to take a shot at Davis and made a statement that he’s not retired yet. The fight took place and Alvarez achieved a dominating victory against Ryder, though he couldn’t end the fight in a knockout.

At the beginning of the event, the seats were pretty much empty, however as the time for their fight arrived, the stadium was filled to the brim. Over 50,000 people were present to watch the duo go at each other, meaning just the gate for the fight was around $1 million. Recently, a Twitter user, Ray Jackson, shared the news of the PPV numbers for the fight. He claimed that the PPV buys were around 220k- 235k. However, fans were quick to point out their disbelief over his claims.

Canelo Alvarez (59-2-2) successfully defended his WBO, IBF, WBA and WBC super middleweight titles and continued his rebound from the second loss of his illustrious boxing career on Saturday night with a unanimous-decision win over John Ryder (32-6).

The location of the fight made Canelo’s win over Ryder even sweeter as the 32-year-old handled business in front of a packed crowd at Estadio Akron, Zapopan in his hometown of Jalisco, Mexico.

In what appeared to be one of the smallest rings I can remember seeing in a championship fight in some time, Canelo outgunned the game, but overmatched Ryder en route to the easy decision victory (118-109, 118-109, and 120-107).

Canelo walked Ryder down most of the fight landing the harder and more impacting shots to the challenger, dropping h

5 Best Opponents for Canelo Alvarez’s Next Fight

Being Canelo Alvarez means never having to beg for a fight.

As the reigning four-belt champion at 168 pounds and long-time claimant to the sport’s undisputed pay-per-view title, the cinnamon-haired Mexican star has the unique ability to dictate nearly every detail from opponent to location to TV provider.

He returned from an injury-prompted eight-month hiatus to retake center stage Saturday night in his home country, where he dispatched unheralded challenger John Ryder by unanimous decision to keep his cache of jewelry and cue up speculation about his next foe.

The winner earned scores of 120-107 and 118-109 (twice) from the three judges.

Alvarez is expected to compete again in four months, resuming his preferred schedule of fighting both in early May and mid-September—alongside yearly celebrations of Mexico’s defeat of invading French troops on May 5, 1862, and its declaration of independence from Spain on September 16, 1810—for the sixth time in the last 13 years.

The B/R combat team surveyed the landscape to determine the best possible co-stars for his next appearance and came up with a list of five best suited to fit the bill. Take a look at what we came up with, and drop a thought or two of your own in the comments section.

1. Dmitry Bivol

1 of 5

These lists are typically delivered from Nos. 5 to 1.

But we’ll go in ascending order this time, if for no other reason than Dmitry Bivol is the opponent whom Alvarez has specifically and publicly declared is his prime target.

    Because they have history together.

And in Alvarez’s mind, at least, unfinished business.

Bivol was a skilled but largely unappreciated operator a year ago when Alvarez decided he’d move up to 175 pounds to challenge the unbeaten Russian for the WBA share of the light heavyweight kingdom Bivol had overseen in full-fledged fashion since 2019.

Twelve rounds later, Alvarez had suffered his first defeat since 2013 and kindled the sort of rivalry—at least from his perspective—he’d not experienced outside of a multi-fight series with Gennadiy Golovkin that stretched from 2017 to 2022.

So, if the superstar gets his way, Bivol’s got next later this summer.

“Right now,” he told DAZN’s Chris Mannix, “my short-term goal is a fight with Dmitry Bivol, and then we’ll see.”

2. David Benavidez

2 of 5

LAS VEGAS, NV - MARCH 25: (L-R) David Benavidez punches Caleb Plant in their Interim WBC World Super Middleweight Title bout at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on March 25, 2src23 in Las Vegas, NV, United States. (Photo by Alejandro Salazar/PX Images/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images)

The smart money, with good reason, is on Bivol.

So the remaining names on this list are best framed as conditional if that rematch doesn’t get made right away or subsequent to a would-be Alvarez victory if it does.

Either way, no name surpasses David Benavidez’s.

The 26-year-old Arizonan with Mexican roots has never been a hotter commodity than he is these days, thanks to two previous reigns as the WBC’s champion at 168 pounds and a recent defeat of ex-champ (and loser to Alvarez) Caleb Plant that made him the sanctioning body’s mandatory challenger to the title Alvarez now holds.

    He’s unbeaten at 27-0 with 23 KOs. He’s menacing at 6’2″ with a 74.5-inch reach.

And he’s eager for a showdown, as he stated clearly after the Pl
