Canelo Álvarez thought his thought his victory over Jaime Munguía left no doubt as to where he stands in boxing’s pound-for-pound hierarchy.

In his post-fight interview, Álvarez praised Munguía’s abilities but said “he’s a little slow.” The 33-year-old added he felt self-assured in the ring, perhaps too much so.

“I can see every punch. Sometimes he got me because I get so confident,” he said. “… I did really good and I feel proud about it. … I’m the best fighter right now for sure.”

Canelo Alvarez is still the undisputed super middleweight champion.

On Saturday night at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Alvarez dropped Jaime Munguia en route to a unanimous decision victory (117-110, 116-111 & 115-112).

Munguia had his moments landing some clean combinations, but Alvarez walked through all of them and didn’t show any signs of being affected by the punches.

Alvarez landed a picture-perfect right uppercut that sent Munguia to the canvas in the fourth round. It was the first time Munguia had been dropped in his career.

Munguia didn’t slow his effort after this moment. He made it to his feet and kept trying to put pressure on Alvarez throughout the fight.

While he landed a few noteworthy punches each round, Munguia’s lack of speed left him vulnerable to Alvarez’s power counterpunches, leading to the former being outboxed.

According to CompuBox numbers forwarded to me, Alvarez outlanded Munguia 234-170, and most notably, he connected on 151 power punches to 96 for the challenger.

With the victory, Alvarez improved his impressive record to 61-2-2. Munguia took the first loss of his professional career. He is now 43-1. While Munguia lost, he made a solid account of himself. Perhaps he could move up to fight at light heavyweight.

“I took my time. I have a lot of experience. Munguia is a great fighter. He’s strong and smart. But I have 12 rounds to win the fight and I did. I did really good and I’m proud of it. He’s strong, but he’s a little slow. I could see every punch. That’s why I’m the best.”

“When I retire, my numbers will say what position I’m in. I know there’s a lot of great Mexican fighters in the past, but I’m the best fighting right now. I’m gonna rest and enjoy my family. If the money is right, I can fight right now. I’ve fought everyone and I can do what I want.”

Former WBO super welterweight champion Jaime Munguia dropped to 43-1, 34 KOs. The 27-year-old contender of Tijuana, Baja California suffered his first career defeat and didn’t succeed in becoming champion in his second weight class.

“I came out strong and was winning the early rounds,” said Munguia. “I let my hands go, but he’s a fighter with a lot of experience. The loss hurts because it’s my first loss and I felt strong.”

“There’s no doubt I would have beaten anyone else tonight. He has a lot of experience. I started well, but he’s a fighter who creates a lot of problems.”

In the PPV opener, Lithuania’s WBA welterweight champion Eimantas Stanionis successfully returned to the ring with the win by unanimous decision against Gabriel Maestre of Venezuela.

Among the prelims, welterweight Jesus Ramos of Casa Grande, Arizona got back in the win column with the ninth-round TKO against Venezuela’s Johan Gonzalez. Also at welterweight, Vito Mielnicki Jr of Belleville, New Jersey defeated Ronald Cruz of Los Angeles by unanimous decision.

Terence Crawford Warned About Canelo Alvarez by Mexican Boxing Icon: “Weight Classes Exist for a Reason”

Terence Crawford Warned About Canelo Alvarez by Mexican Boxing Icon: “Weight Classes Exist for a Reason”

Canelo Alvarez will face Jaime Munguia on May 5th but the fans are already pondering about his next fight after Munguia. So, who’s next? The name on everyone’s lips? Terence Crawford. A potential super fight between the two champions would be a dream come true for boxing purists. But there’s a catch – Crawford needs to climb three weight classes just to make it into Canelo’s domain.

Canelo’s recent fights haven’t exactly quelled the critics’ fire. Since many fans crave the David Benavidez fight, the undisputed super middleweight champion finds himself at a crossroads whether to face Crawford or give Benavidez a shot at his title. However, Juan Manuel Marquez, a champion in four weight classes, warns Terence Crawford before jumping weights to take on Canelo Alvarez. He believes it would give him a lot of advantages over Crawford, and ‘Bud’ shouldn’t even try to get into such a fight.

Terence Crawford advised not to venture beyond super welterweight

Boxing legend Juan Manuel Marquez has thrown his hat into the ring – well, not literally – with his thoughts on the potential Canelo Alvarez-Terence Crawford megafight. Marquez, a man who has stared down greats like Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather, brings a wealth of experience to the table. Marquez, thus, questioned the wisdom of Crawford jumping two weight classes on FightHype just to fight Canelo. “Crawford’s a great fighter,” Marquez acknowledged, “but we need to realize weight classes exist for a reason.

His stance is clear. A significant weight disparity gives Canelo a hefty advantage. He mentioned, “Crawford needs to fight at the welterweight division, or at super-welterweight maximum because Canelo would have too many advantages.” Marquez argued that Crawford should stay put at welterweight or the super welterweight divi

Rescue Dog Who Craves Attention From Everyone on Walks Wins Pet of the Week

Rescue Dog Who Craves Attention From Everyone on Walks Wins Pet of the Week

From a Labrador’s expert opinion that dogs should be fed cheese to a cat saying hi via a security camera, pets have sparked plenty of joy this week.

Besides pets that have found online fame in viral videos, we love sharing our readers’ pets in our Newsweek Pet of the Week feature.

If you want your pet to be featured, follow the instructions at the end of this story.

Canelo the dog
Canelo loves to stop and say hello to everyone on walks.

Evelin Portillo

The Winner

This week’s winner is Canelo, a dog rescued from Louisiana who is now living in his forever home in New York.

Owner Evelin Portillo welcomed him into the family from Port Washington’s North Shore Animal League, and he has a seriously friendly personality.

“When we take him for walks, he thinks he is going to be pet by everyone he encounters,” Portillo told Newsweek.

Canelo loves praise more than food, and Portillo said the rewards of being his owner are endless.

“He is our second puppy,” she said. “We learned how to handle a puppy from our previous dog. He gave our family 15 years of love and laughs.”

The Finalists

Scottie the bulldog
Bulldog Scottie had to have surgery on both of his hind legs but is now doing well.

LaSha’ Page

Our first finalist this week is a bulldog, Scottie, who lives in Alabama with owner LaSha’ Page. Almost 4 years old, he has grown into a huge 120-pound pup.

When he was younger, he had to have surgery on both of his hind legs to correct an injury to torn ligaments, similar to an ACL injury in humans.

“This long period of inactivity after the surgery resulted in this substantial weight gain and now makes it more difficult than normal gain to get rid of because it’s very stressful on his body,” Page told Newsweek.

With his injury fixed, Scottie is now doing well.

“He’s happy and, besides overweight, very healthy and loves to play,” his owner said. “I’d love for you to let

I’m Riding With Ryan Garcia
… ‘He’s A Good Kid’

TMZSports.com

Ryan Garcia might be causing a ruckus on the internet, but there’s one guy who’s sticking by his side no matter what — ’cause Canelo Alvarez tells TMZ Sports he’s got the young superstar’s back amid his bizarre social media antics.

“You know, he’s a good kid and we don’t need to judge him,” Canelo told TMZ Sports. “He’s a good kid and this is the moment when you need to support your friends and, I know, we have a lot of issues before but … I don’t care.”

Of course, Ryan has been making a ton of noise leading up to his April 20 fight against Devin Haney … spewing wild conspiracies and promising free BBLs — among other wild proclamations.

Canelo isn’t distancing himself from Ryan, however — telling us the Golden Boy mega-fighter will be just fine.

In fact, Canelo says he knows Ryan as a person … and knows despite what it looks like, he is well aware of what the King is like deep down.

“This is a moment when you need to support your friends,” Canelo added.

“He’s So Slow”: Canelo Alvarez’s Combos in Recent POV Training Clip Fails to Impress Fans

“He’s So Slow”: Canelo Alvarez’s Combos in Recent POV Training Clip Fails to Impress Fans

A new video of Canelo Alvarez trying a particular combination seems to be fast-graining traction. talkSPORT‘s Michael Benson shared the clip on his X. The undisputed super middleweight champion is preparing hard for his upcoming title defense against fellow Mexican Jaime Munguia. But how do the fans feel about the training clip? Die-hard fans must be feeling excited. However, among those who commented, there were a few who didn’t feel likewise.

The Alvarez-Munguia match takes place on May 4, the Cinco de Mayo weekend, at the T Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The P4P great last fought and defeated Jermell Charlo during his third title defense. The Tijuana-born former light middleweight champion, on the other hand, forced an early stoppage on John Ryder later in January this year.

Canelo Alvarez: Ready with Punches; Thrilling Sneak Peek

Article continues below this ad

Michael Benson’s tweet read, “Canelo Alvarez showing a first-person POV of what Jaime Munguia will be facing on May 4th…” The clip begins with the world champion throwing a jab with the leading hand. It is followed by an uppercut (right) on a mitt held by a trainer. From the looks of it, it appears that the same person is also holding a punching bag tightly. So basically, Alvarez is working on two props simultaneously. The third punch is Alvarez’s now-well-known left hook to the body, here it being thrown on the punching bag. Then a straight right to the mitt and finally a second left hook complete the combination.

Given their profiles, few expect the fight to go the whole distance. It could be a high-octane slugfest, with both boxers relying on trademark hits to stop the opponent.
