The boxing superstar returns to action on Sept. 14, when he defends his WBA, WBC, and WBO super middleweight titles against Edgar Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs). Alvarez’s 66th pro bout takes place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on the same night as UFC 306, which goes down at the new Sphere venue just a few blocks away.
Alvarez (61-2-2, 39 KOs) responded to the trash talk in an interview on the Million Dollaz Worth of Game. Suffice to say, he’s confident he’ll beat UFC on Mexican Independence Day weekend.
“It’s just different,” Alvarez said. “Maybe other boxing matches, maybe, but Canelo is different. There are other kind of fights, but Canelo is just different. I don’t care if the UFC is there, when Canelo figh
IBF featherweight champion Luis Alberto Lopez defends his belt against Angelo Leo in the main event of a Top Rank on ESPN card at Tingley Col iseum in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on Saturday (ESPN/ESPN , 10 p.m. ET).
Lopez’s last loss was in May 2019 and he has won 14 consecutive fights since, including impressive victories over Josh Warrington in England and Michael Conlan in Northern Ireland. But is he the best featherweight in boxing?
Vasiliy Lomachenko recently rejected a lucrative fight against fellow lightweight champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis and while he hasn’t announced his retirement, will we see “Hi-Tech” in the ring again?
Canelo Alvarez will make his second ring appearance this year, but not against the fighter fans have clamored for. Instead of David Benavidez, Canelo will face Edgar Berlanga, who’s never fought at this level in his short career. While Berlanga possesses incredible power — he started his career with 16 consecutive first-round KOs — can he find a way to win, or at least go the distance against Alvarez?
Former heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua will fight for a title for the first time in two years. Joshua will face IBF champion Daniel Dubois in London, as “AJ” is favored to become a three-time world champion (-550 per ESPN BET).
And two-division champion Danny Garcia returns to the ring for just the second time in almost four years to take on WBA middleweight champion Erislandy Lara. Garcia, who won belts at 140 and 147 pounds, is moving up in weight for the chance to become a three-division champion, but can he upset an older but still powerful Lara?
Mike Coppinger and Nick Parkinson answer these questions and more, trying to distinguish what’s real and what’s not.

Dominant Lomachenko stops Kambosos Jr. in 11th to win title
Vasiliy Lomachenko throws an onslaught of punches to the body of George Kambosos Jr. that forces the referee to stop the fight in the 11th round.
Not real… for now. Lomachenko is contemplating retirement, sources told ESPN, part of the reason he declined a lucrative fight with Gervonta Davis in November. There’s also a possibility that Lomachenko will return in the first half of 2025 to defend his IBF lightweight title.
After all, Lomachenko (18-3, 12 KOs) appeared in a fighting mood Saturday in Los Angeles: he and Shakur Stevenson had to be separated at ringside during the Terence Crawford-Israil Madrimov card. Lomachenko was seen telling Stevenson, “Let’s go right now.
If that’s any indication, Lomachenko will fight again. Maybe even against Davis or Stevenson, the two biggest fights on the table for him. But if he never laces up the gloves again, Lomachenko’s legacy is secured. He’s a three-division champion, a first-ballot Hall of Famer and a mainstay of the pound-for-pound list over the last 10 years.
Canelo Alvarez’s former promoter Oscar De La Hoya took time out to send a firey message to boxing’s biggest star for not wanting to negotiate with Turki Alalshikh.
De La Hoya and Alvarez have repeatedly exchanged heated words over the years since falling out. In a social media video De La Hoya calls “Clap Back Thursdays,” the Hall of Fame boxer took aim at Canelo for not wanting to do business with Alalshikh, who has quickly become a major player when it comes to booking the best boxing matchups possible.
Alalshikh recently shared he was no longer interested in trying to make a fight with Canelo against Terence Crawford. The message prompted a public argument between Canelo and Alalshikh.
“So it turns out, I’m not the only one who thinks Canelo is an arrogant piece of sh*t,” De La Hoya said in a video on X. “Turki Alalshikh recently revealed that Canelo refused to meet with him in person, and isn’t entertaining any deals to be done with him.
Canelo Alvarez and Turki Alalshikh are not seeing eye to eye. In fact, far from it.
The boxing superstar and Saudi Arabian Royal Court adviser turned boxing promoter had a heated, public back-and-forth over a failed negotiation. Alalshikh, who’s become a prominent boxing figure by making some of the biggest fights in recent years, has been very vocal about his desire to make a superfight between Alvarez and Terence Crawford.
“Crawford needs to fight Teofimo first, and then we’ll see,” Alvarez told Fight Hub TV. “Like I’ve said, at the end of the day, I’m not asking for that fight. They want to make that fight because it’s a payday obviously, but I don’t want that fight. Teofimo deserves more than me.
“My response to Turki is this: Yesterday they texted me, and they said, ‘We can talk about the fight in Febr
What will it take for two-division undisputed championTerence Crawford to achieve “another milestone for greatness”? During the in-ring interview, after his unanimous decision win over Israil Madrimov last Saturday, he revealed his motivation to fight unified super-middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez. A matchup with the iconic Mexican fighter would mean the biggest paycheck of his life, and a monumental conclusion to his glorious career. But Canelo Alvarez isn’t in a rush. The most sought-after matchmaker in boxing, His Excellency Turki Alalshikh‘s offer to ‘Cinnamon’ for the Crawford fight, has been snubbed. Alvarez made his intentions clear – he is the one who calls the shots!
Meanwhile, HE is not willing to wait around for Canelo Alvarez and will be going forward with other lucrative fight offers for the four-division champion Crawford. Amidst the clash of egos between Alvarez and HE Turki Alalshikh, former Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe has expressed his happiness for Crawford as he acknowledged the master plan from the figurehead of the Riyadh season.
Time for Terence Crawford to enjoy the spoils of war!

Crawford has been boxing professionally for sixteen years now. Although he has elite fighters in his win column, some would say the fanfare around him isn’t what you expect for one of the P4P greats. This is where His Excellency comes to make things right in boxing. “I will be focusing for the US market with bigger fights, especially for the legend Crawford, ” HE Turki Alalshikh stated.

Canelo Álvarez will reportedly be stripped of his IBF super middleweight title prior to his Sept. 14 fight against Edgar Berlanga in Las Vegas.
According to ESPN’s Mike Coppinger, Álvarez was stripped of the title as his mandatory defense against William Scull, IBF’s No. 1 contender, was overdue. Scull will now face off against No. 2 contender Vladimir Shiskin for the vacant title.
“Once we officially notify the involved parties we will issue a statement,” IBF president Daryl Peoples told Coppinger.
Álvarez will still go up against Berlanga, although his IBF super middleweight title is reportedly no longer on the line. Instead, he’ll look to defend his WBA, WBC and WBO titles against the 27-year-

Canelo Alvarez, boxing’s top star, is set to defend his super middleweight championship against Edgar Berlanga on Sept. 14 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, sources told ESPN.
Alvarez, ESPN’s No. 5 pound-for-pound boxer, will be a heavy favorite to dispatch Berlanga, who will fight on the upper echelon for the first time. Mexico’s Alvarez (61-2-2, 39 KOs) is the undisputed champion at 168 pounds but it’s possible the IBF title won’t be on the line as his fight with the IBF mandatory challenger is overdue, sources said.
Alvarez, 34, is coming off a May decision victory over Jaime Munguia. Canelo hasn’t scored a knockout since November 2021 but has scored knockdowns in each of his last three fights.
Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs) is a 27-year-old from Brooklyn, New York of Puerto Rican descent. He’s best known for starting his career with 16 first-round KOs. However, as his competition stiffened, Berlanga’s next five opponents lasted the distance. Berlanga’s last in-ring action was a sixth-round KO of Padraig McCrory in February.
David Benavidez has been the public’s top option for fighting Alvarez for years, but Canelo has shown no interest in the WBC interim super middleweight champion.
How did the Alvarez-Berlanga matchup materialize? Who else was considered? Let’s take a look as Alvarez prepares for another Mexican Independence Day weekend fight:
Who else was in the running to fight Alvarez in September?
The other finalist was Chris Eubank Jr., per sources. Eubank, 34, is the son of British boxer Chris Eubank, who starred in the 1990s in England.
Eubank, too, would have been a major underdog against Alvarez. He’s coming off a 10th-round TKO victory over Liam Smith last September that avenged a KO loss to Smith earlier in the year.
Eubank is also a middleweight (rated No. 4 by ESPN) and would have moved up in weight for the opportunity. While Eubank would have raised interest in the U.K., his name resonates less than Berlanga’s stateside.
What about Berlanga? Does he pose any threat to Alvarez?
There’s nothing to suggest Berlanga, ESPN’s No. 6 super middleweight, will present any issues for Alvarez inside the ring.
Berlanga doesn’t appear to have the boxing skills to han
