Dana White Left Red-Faced as Genius Move Allows Unwanted Guest at UFC’s Sphere Event

Two rivals will sit closer to each other when they watch the action up close at Noche UFC. Dana White will welcome Oscar De La Hoya with a forced smile, as the latter will enter the coveted Las Vegas Sphere instead of joining his fraternity at the Canelo Alvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga bill. The combat sports community is aware of the deep strife between the two promoters and is still wondering how that will happen. It seems the UFC CEO has laid bare the genius play of his boxing counterpart.

De La Hoya recently specified his intentions to skip the Alvarez vs. Berlanga card, as he labeled the event “robbery.” Instead, the former Olympic Gold medalist expressed his desire to watch Noche UFC a few streets away on the same block. But that seemed far-fetched reality until he dialed up his ally, HE Turki Alalshikh.

Interestingly, Riyadh Season is the title sponsor of Noche UFC, and as a result, the Saudi adviser has his own separate ticket block. De La Hoya is part of the same ticket block and will have access to the near-cage seats. White, 55, shed light on the situation when he appeared at the Contender Series 71 press conference.

The UFC lynchpin said, “Well, I got that call today. He’s coming with Sheikh Turki. He is part of his ticket block. I knew he wasn’t part of my ticket block. That’s for damn sure. Oscar does things that are good for Oscar at the moment.”

While White then discussed Alvarez, 34, and Al Haymon’s decision to host the event on the same date, he was respectful towards both. He blamed MGM for the clash of dates. But now it seems he might have another tough task, to accommodate De La Hoya, the same man whom he tried to “bury.”

How did Dana White and Oscar De La Hoya become rivals?

It all started with De La Hoya’s intention to venture into the MMA. The boxer-turned-promoter even hosted the trilogy fight between the two MMA greats, Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz, in 2018 as his first fight. However, because of their age and health concerns, he received scathing criticism, with White also ripping him apart. But De La Hoya saw it differently.

He told Shannon Sharpe, “When I first thought about getting into MMA, I strongly felt that he [Dana White] just wanted to bury me, not have competition. He started talking s–t about me.” The two have been at loggerheads since, with all talks of becoming friends tossed to the bin. It remains to be seen how the encounter at Noche UFC affects their animosity.

As the spotlight grows brighter on their showdown, fans have become increasingly curious not only about their professional performances but also about their personal lives. Before diving into Lara’s personal life, it’s worth noting his impressive career. The middleweight southpaw was born in Cuba’s Guantanamo on April 11, 1983. Like many compatriots, he also started out young in the world-renowned Cuban boxing system. Over the years, he managed to build a formidable amateur resume. It included winning medals at world championships. Like other Cuban boxers, he could have made it to Olympic glory. But he preferred a different path—a relocation to the United States.

Things developed on the personal front as well. In 2017, roughly six years after he came to the United States, Lara and his wife Yudi were finally granted American citizenship. The couple were already living in Houston, Texas, with their three children. In the past, Yudi Lara grabbed headlines for the way she went against Gabe Rosado. The now-retired boxer had reportedly criticized her husband following the split decision loss to Jarett Hurd.

He has expressed a deep desire to reunite with them, stating, “It hurts every day. Communications are a little better now, and we have better contact. Though he turned 41 this year, Erislandy Lara maintains the same relentless ambition that he had when he commenced his boxing journey. He knows he faces a formidable opponent in Danny Garcia. ‘Of Course I’ll Beat’ Canelo Alvarez …

Canelo Alvarez‘s strength and punching power may scare some boxers, but not Terence Crawford, who tells TMZ Sports he’s absolutely sure he’d get the victory over the Mexican superstar if the two fought.

Of course, at the moment, it’s a big “if” … as even though Crawford’s made it clear he wants the scrap — Canelo doesn’t seem so sure.

If you missed it, following his Saturday night victory over Edgar Berlanga — which Crawford actually attended — Canelo said straight up “no comment” when asked about a potential tilt with Bud.

Nonetheless, when we spoke with Crawford on Sunday, the 36-year-old pugilist told us he still really wants to throw hands with Canelo in a ring.

“I feel as if that’s a legacy fight,” he said. “I feel as if this is the biggest fight in boxing today.”

If it does go down, Crawford acknowledges he’ll have some challenges. He said he will certainly have to be aware of Canelo’s size and power. But, he told us, “I’ve been fighting bigger guys my whole life,” and he’s guaranteeing he’d come away with a win.

UFC 306 and Canelo Alvarez Delivered, but Events Shouldn’t Occur at the Same Time

Sean O'Malley and Merab Dvalishvili

Las Vegas lived up to its reputation as the fight capital of the world on Saturday night, playing host to both UFC 306 and the latest title defense from boxing star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Both events delivered — it’s just too bad they overlapped.

UFC 306 marked the promotion’s debut in the new Las Vegas Sphere and lived up to all the pre-fight hype, taking full advantage of the state-of-the-art arena’s many bells and whistles. Also called Noche UFC, it commemorated Mexican Independence Day, and featured many of the promotion’s top Mexican fighters — except for the main event, which pitted American champ Sean O’Malley against Georgian challenger Merab Dvalishvili in a bantamweight title fight.

O’Malley, who won the belt with a knockout of Dvalishvili’s training partner Aljamain Sterling last year and defended it with a decision win over Marlon “Chito” Vera earlier this year, was one of the promotion’s biggest stars heading in the marquee fight, but ultimately suffered a comprehensive, unanimous-decision loss.

“I feel like I’m in a dream,” an elated Dvalishvili told commentator Joe Rogan after the fight, with the bantamweight belt wrapped around his waist. “Today I’m the best fighter in the UFC.”

It went more or less exactly the way anyone who was picking Dvalishvili predicted it would. The Georgian, who is one of the most relentless wrestlers in MMA at present, completed takedown after takedown throughout the five-round fight. While he was badly hurt by a body shot in the final round, he successfully neutral

Canelo did not look like a fighter who had any interest in going all 12 rounds with his opponent from the outset. He was dialed in from the first round on.

The first real highlight came in the third as the champion’s constant pressure with his footwork opened up the opportunity for a lightning-quick left hand to find a home. Berlanga got a good taste of Álvarez’s power.

One of the most dramatic moments of the bout actually came in the fifth round when things got a little chippy. Álvarez took exception to a low blow landed by his opponent and ended up throwing a punch while the ref was trying to break the two apart.

Round 5: Alvarez was incensed after Berlanga hit him low and returned one of his own. After Harvey Dock intervened to take control, Alvarez swung wildly at Berlanga in the corner. Berlanga isn’t opening up much but Canelo must find a way to score the KO here. 10-9, Canelo. 50-44,…

Canelo Alvarez dominates Edgar Berlanga, retains super middleweight title in Las Vegas

(This story first was published at USA TODAY.)

Canelo Alvarez did not get the knockout he promised.

But he landed brutal punches (and took a few too) in an impressive victory over Edgar Berlanga by unanimous decision in the 12-round super middleweight fight.

The fighters had to be separated on multiple occasions and talked trash throughout the fight. Berlanga was warned for head butting at one point and Alvarez seemed to take exception to that and other Berlanga tactics. “I get a little angry – a Mexican man,” Alvarez said. The crowd roared with laughte

The Mexican dropped his rival en route to a points win, with fans in the arena seemingly impressed with quite how easily he dispatched of the Puerto Rican.

But estranged promoter of Alvarez and boxing legend De La Hoya, was quick to put down his efforts on social media.

He wrote: “I told you so. You should have saved your hard earned money [several sleeping emojis].”

A fan then argued that it was one of Alvarez’s more impressive performances, but De La Hoya wasn’t entertaining it.

He responded: “[Laughing face emojis] Wow so he threw more than 3 punches a round.”

Alvarez did not only throw three punches a round and controlled the spectacle for the vast majority in the verdict of fans.

De La Hoya had fumed at Alvarez’s decision to fight Berlanga before the event, and had ranted over his fighting style.

He promoted Alvarez for ten years between 2010 and 2020 overseeing the astonishing rise of the pound-for-pound superstar.
