Kamaru Usman might have a welterweight title defense against Leon Edwards on tap at UFC 278 on Aug. 20, but he’s already looking ahead to a fresh challenge.
Usman told TMZ Sports in an interview published on Tuesday he wants a date with boxing star Canelo Alvarez at some point.
“It’s never been done, pound-for-pound versus pound-for-pound,” he said. “And, they’re significantly close in weight classes to be able to do it — why not?! … When you hear that that fight’s announced, everyone’s going to be watching that fight.”
Usman first told TMZ Sports in March he was hopeful of fighting Alvarez in the fall. He thought the event could net revenues of nine figures.

Their rivalry has been one of the best in modern day boxing but fans have had to wait for a third and final clash.
Now, they will go toe-to-toe once again under the lights in Sin City and it should be thriller.
Canelo, who lost to Dmitry Bivol in his WBA light heavyweight title bout in May, will put his super middleweight titles on the line.
Golovkin has only fought four times since his defeat to the Mexican and beat Ryota Murata in Japan most recently.

The 12-round super middleweight title clash is set to be held on Saturday, September 17.
It is taking place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
The card will get going at 1am on Sunday morning UK time with Canelo vs Golovkin expected from 5am.
