Belal Muhammad has faced growing criticism about the game plan and strategy he used in a loss to Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 315 that cost him the welterweight title.

In the days and weeks leading up to the event, Muhammad repeatedly stated he wanted to show off his “Canelo hands” and prove his boxing could go up against anybody — including a known knockout artist like Della Maddalena. During his rise up the ranks, Muhammad displayed incredible wrestling and constant pressure that allowed him to largely maul his competition. Despite going for nine takedowns during the fight, he’s being slammed for the way he approached the matchup against the Australian slugger.

UFC legend Matt Brown vehemently disagrees with the notion that Muhammad’s loss really comes down to poor game planning because that totally negates what Della Maddalena did to shut him down.

“It’s almost an irrelevant question because it didn’t matter what his game plan was,” Brown explained on the latest episode of The Fighter vs. The Writer. “Jack had an answer for everything that he did.

“Yeah, if you’re on Belal’s camp, you’re probably looking back saying OK, we probably could have game planned differently but it’s hard to imagine that would have changed anything. When you go back to the drawing board for Belal, you’ve got a lot of drawing to do when you’re looking at a Jack Della Maddalena fight.”

The new boxing promotion, headed up by the UFC’s owners at TKO Group Holdings, has ambitious plans for the future with the first card set to launch in September when Canelo Alvarez takes on Terence Crawford in a superfight taking place in Las Vegas.

UFC CEO Dana White has already been announced as the promoter for the event with WWE president Nick Khan also involved in the newly formed boxing league, which is financially backed by Saudi Arabia and Turki Alalshikh, the chairman of the General Entertainment Authority in the country. While some details have been revealed since the boxing promotion was first announced, the new league has ambitious plans when it comes to the full schedule that kicks off with the card on Sept. 12.

Alvarez vs. Scull lacked significant action for 12 rounds, and Alvarez won the fight via unanimous decision.

Álvarez became an undisputed champion in the division for the second time when the judges scored his ho-hum bout early Sunday Saudi local time against Scull 115-113, 116-112, 119-109. The 34-year-old Mexican boxer improved to 63-2-2, with 39 knockouts, and is unbeaten in 10 fights in the super middleweight category.

The decision had barely been announced before Turki al-Sheikh, head of the General Entertainment Authority of Saudi Arabia, stepped into the ring and ordered it cleared out so that he could bring four-division champion Crawford out of the crowd to face Álvarez, who was wearing one belt around his waist, another over his shoulder and holding one in each arm.

“Now we want to do the face off for the fight of the century,” Alalshikh told the crowd, “between the two great fighters in our generation.”
