‘I hope there’s no hard feelings’: Kamaru Usman clears the air with Canelo Alvarez over past boxing callouts

‘I hope there’s no hard feelings’: Kamaru Usman clears the air with Canelo Alvarez over past boxing callouts

Kamaru Usman and Canelo Alvarez are now cool and have cleared the air on their contentious past on social media.

A few years ago, when Usman reigned as UFC welterweight champion, he relentlessly called for a cross-over boxing match against Alvarez, who’s arguably the biggest star in boxing and considered by many as the pound-for-pound best of recent years. Alvarez, who never paid too much attention to the MMA world, would sometimes ignore Usman and sometimes clap back, saying he was just in need of a “payday.”

Now, a few years later, after their back-and-forth, Usman had Alvarez on his “Pound 4 Pound” podcast ahead of Alvarez’s Sept. 14 title defense against Edgar Berlanga and made sure to address the “elephant in the room” right off the bat.

“Obviously, when I was champion in the UFC, I was welterweight champion of the world, and you dominated as champion in boxing, there were some talks about potentially fighting,” Usman said. “First and foremost, I’m a fan of yours. I’m a fan of your work and everything you’ve done in the sport of boxing. I think it’s important for us to clear the air and have this t

Canelo Alvarez Appearing to Have “Same Height” as Teofimo Lopez Stuns Fans Amid Gervonta Davis Fight Speculations

Canelo Alvarez Appearing to Have “Same Height” as Teofimo Lopez Stuns Fans Amid Gervonta Davis Fight Speculations

Teofimo Lopez seems to have struck up a good relationship with Canelo Alvarez. Recently, in a media interview ahead of the Edgar Berlanga fight on September 14, the Mexican boxing icon stated that Teofimo Lopez deserved a fight against Terence Crawford ahead of himself. “Crawford needs to fight Teofimo [Lopez] first and then we’ll see,” Alvarez remarked while Lopez and his father stood beside him.

And now, both boxers have been seen training with each other ahead of Canelo’s upcoming bout. The WBO super lightweight champion, who has defeated the likes of elite boxers like Vasyl Lomachenko and Josh Taylor, isn’t a bad choice at all for the 34-year-old fighter to engage in a light sparring session. And, it is also a good opportunity for Lopez to pick up a few tricks from one of the best practitioners of the ‘sweet science’.

In the training footage shared on X titled, “Canelo and Teofimo Lopez in the ring,” Canelo seems to be teaching a few techniques to Lopez to deal with being pressured against the ropes. At first, Lopez threw three jabs. Thereafter, Lopez threw a cross and hook. The drill was then repeated multiple times, as both fighters executed it perfectly every time without faltering.

What’s your reaction?

Did Canelo Alvarez just shrink? Fans are losing it over his height! React!

Notably, in 2022, Teofimo Lopez was thinking of adding Canelo’s trainer Eddy Reynoso to his coaching team alongside his father. “He is [a great coach]. I love the connection. I’ve talked to Canelo a few times. Yeah, we’ll see. My father, he’s always going to be my main coach, my #1, my guy. I’m always going to hold it down for him,” Lopez told ESnews. However, the talks died down and the linkup never materialized. Nevertheless, it seems Lopez’s relationship with Canelo has strengthened over the years to the point that ‘Cinnamon’ is throwing away a financially lucrative fight with Terence Crawford for Lopez.

Meanwhile, boxing fans made certain astute observations about the fighters’ physical stature and speculated about their upcoming fights. Safe to say, the community was happy witnessing Lopez throw hands with Canelo Alvarez.

Should Teofimo Lopez change his trainer?

What’s your perspective on:

Canelo and Teofimo look the same height—does this change your view on a Gervonta Davis fight?

Have an interesting take?

One fan claimed that Canelo wasn’t as big as they anticipated. Thus, they have a newfound respect for Alvarez’s campaign in the super middleweight division, which has fighters who are much taller than him. The comment read, “Canelo real life small asl.  Same height as a lightweight lmao 😭😭 makes his 168 run even more impressive.” Canelo stands at 5 ft 7 1⁄2 inches while Lopez is 5 ft 8 inches. Remarkably, Lopez is actually a fraction taller than Canelo. However, both pugilists compete in weight classes that are miles apart.

Another fan claimed that Teofimo Lopez would level up tremendously in his boxing prowess if he had Canelo Alvarez as his stablemate. They commented, “That training with Canelo can turn Teo into a whole different beast.” For sure, Lopez can pick up on some slick head movement, and the left-hook-right uppercut combination from Canelo.

Meanwhile, another fan claimed that Lopez is getting prepared to fight one of the most explosive and dangerous boxers in the lightweight division, Gervonta Davis. They commented, “Teo getting ready for Gervonta. ” It must be pointed out to fans that Lopez had earlier expressed his desire to fight “mini-me” Davis after Terence Crawford. In an earlier interview, he also called Gervonta Davis a “f**kin pussy” who would not dare to fight him. However, despite the callout, there seems to be no response from Tank’s team regarding a fight. One reason might be the different weights at which they fight.

Meanwhile, another fan claimed that Lopez would thrive under Canelo’s trainer Eddy Reynoso. They commented, Think he’d become much better under Reynoso his dad took him a long way but it’s time to step it up” For those unversed, Teofimo Lopez has been trained throughout his professional as well as amateur career by his father Teofimo Lopez Sr. Therefore, it would be very difficult for Lopez to part with his dad as he considers him a pivotal figure in his success as a boxer.

One fan claimed that Teofimo’s outrageous comments in interviews as well as social media can come across as cringe, but they will still continue to champion him, saying, As cringe as Teo can be that’s my f**king guy.”

Edgar Berlanga: Canelo has ‘a thousand percent’ never faced someone with my power

Mexican icon Canelo Alvarez hasn’t come close to facing the type of puncher as Edgar Berlanga, the unbeaten American has said ahead of their clash in Las Vegas next month.

Berlanga, who is just 27, infamously began his career by scoring 16 successive first-round knockouts ahead of their matchup to contest Canelo’s WBA, WBC and WBO super middleweight titles in the T-Mobile Arena on September 14, Berlanga says that he expects his power to pay dividends once more.

Sean O’Malley aims to steal headlines from Canelo Alvarez with ‘viral knockout’ at UFC 306

Sean O’Malley believes he’ll steal the headlines from Canelo Alvarez after their respective Sept. 14 battles.

O’Malley defends his bantamweight title against Merab Dvalishvili in the main event of UFC 306 at Sphere in Las Vegas, while Alvarez faces Edgar Berlanga on his own Mexican Independence Day card just down the road at T-Mobile Arena.

Although there’s a lot of emphasis on the head-to-head between UFC and one of boxing’s big stars, O’Malley sees it as a fun challenge — and plans to let his performance make the waves throughout the following week.

“I say this every fight, and I’ll probably continue to say it, but I’m so f*cking excited for this fight,” O’Malley said on his YouTube channel. “I wasn’t actually excited for the [Aljamain Sterling] fight, I was f*cking stressed about that fight — just because of my rib, my t

‘I can do whatever I want’: Canelo unconcerned by scheduling conflict with UFC

World champion boxer Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez isn’t giving much thought to the upcoming scheduling conflict with the UFC next month.

Canelo, 34, is due to defend his WBA, WBC and WBO super middleweight titles against the 22-0 American Edgar Berlanga in Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena next month in an event to coincide with Mexican Independence Day. The thing is, though, just down the road at the recently-opened Sphere, the UFC is also holding a Mexican-themed event and despite the conflict potentially diluting the interest in one or both of those fight cards, Canelo says that he isn

Canelo Alvarez responds to sharing Las Vegas fight date with UFC 306: ‘I can do whatever I want’

Canelo Alvarez doesn’t see UFC as competition.

The boxing superstar returns to action on Sept. 14, when he defends his WBA, WBC, and WBO super middleweight titles against Edgar Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs). Alvarez’s 66th pro bout takes place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on the same night as UFC 306, which goes down at the new Sphere venue just a few blocks away.

UFC CEO Dana White has expressed his annoyance at MGM choosing T-Mobile Arena as the location for their fight, and star Conor McGregor warned that UFC’s show will overshadow Alvarez vs. Berlanga.

Alvarez (61-2-2, 39 KOs) responded to the trash talk in an interview on the Million Dollaz Worth of Game. Suffice to say, he’s confident he’ll beat UFC on Mexican Independence Day weekend.

“It’s just different,” Alvarez said. “Maybe other boxing matches, maybe, but Canelo is different. There are other kind of fights, but Canelo is just different. I don’t care if the UFC is there, when Canelo figh

Real or not: Will Canelo KO Berlanga? Lopez the best featherweight? Last of Lomachenko?

Real or not: Will Canelo KO Berlanga? Lopez the best featherweight? Last of Lomachenko?
  • ESPN

Aug 8, 2024, 03:26 PM ET

IBF featherweight champion Luis Alberto Lopez defends his belt against Angelo Leo in the main event of a Top Rank on ESPN card at Tingley Col iseum in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on Saturday (ESPN/ESPN , 10 p.m. ET).

Lopez’s last loss was in May 2019 and he has won 14 consecutive fights since, including impressive victories over Josh Warrington in England and Michael Conlan in Northern Ireland. But is he the best featherweight in boxing?

Vasiliy Lomachenko recently rejected a lucrative fight against fellow lightweight champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis and while he hasn’t announced his retirement, will we see “Hi-Tech” in the ring again?

Canelo Alvarez will make his second ring appearance this year, but not against the fighter fans have clamored for. Instead of David Benavidez, Canelo will face Edgar Berlanga, who’s never fought at this level in his short career. While Berlanga possesses incredible power — he started his career with 16 consecutive first-round KOs — can he find a way to win, or at least go the distance against Alvarez?

Former heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua will fight for a title for the first time in two years. Joshua will face IBF champion Daniel Dubois in London, as “AJ” is favored to become a three-time world champion (-550 per ESPN BET).

And two-division champion Danny Garcia returns to the ring for just the second time in almost four years to take on WBA middleweight champion Erislandy Lara. Garcia, who won belts at 140 and 147 pounds, is moving up in weight for the chance to become a three-division champion, but can he upset an older but still powerful Lara?

Mike Coppinger and Nick Parkinson answer these questions and more, trying to distinguish what’s real and what’s not.

Real or not: Vasiliy Lomachenko will retire without another fight

Dominant Lomachenko stops Kambosos Jr. in 11th to win title

Vasiliy Lomachenko throws an onslaught of punches to the body of George Kambosos Jr. that forces the referee to stop the fight in the 11th round.

Not real… for now. Lomachenko is contemplating retirement, sources told ESPN, part of the reason he declined a lucrative fight with Gervonta Davis in November. There’s also a possibility that Lomachenko will return in the first half of 2025 to defend his IBF lightweight title.

After all, Lomachenko (18-3, 12 KOs) appeared in a fighting mood Saturday in Los Angeles: he and Shakur Stevenson had to be separated at ringside during the Terence Crawford-Israil Madrimov card. Lomachenko was seen telling Stevenson, “Let’s go right now.

If that’s any indication, Lomachenko will fight again. Maybe even against Davis or Stevenson, the two biggest fights on the table for him. But if he never laces up the gloves again, Lomachenko’s legacy is secured. He’s a three-division champion, a first-ballot Hall of Famer and a mainstay of the pound-for-pound list over the last 10 years.

Oscar De La Hoya sounds off on ‘arrogant piece of sh*t’ Canelo for not working with Turki Alalshikh

Oscar De La Hoya sounds off on ‘arrogant piece of sh*t’ Canelo for not working with Turki Alalshikh

Canelo Alvarez’s former promoter Oscar De La Hoya took time out to send a firey message to boxing’s biggest star for not wanting to negotiate with Turki Alalshikh.

De La Hoya and Alvarez have repeatedly exchanged heated words over the years since falling out. In a social media video De La Hoya calls “Clap Back Thursdays,” the Hall of Fame boxer took aim at Canelo for not wanting to do business with Alalshikh, who has quickly become a major player when it comes to booking the best boxing matchups possible.

Alalshikh recently shared he was no longer interested in trying to make a fight with Canelo against Terence Crawford. The message prompted a public argument between Canelo and Alalshikh.

“So it turns out, I’m not the only one who thinks Canelo is an arrogant piece of sh*t,” De La Hoya said in a video on X. “Turki Alalshikh recently revealed that Canelo refused to meet with him in person, and isn’t entertaining any deals to be done with him.

“Why? Because he’s out-priced himsel
