Canelo Alvarez vs. Jermell Charlo: Live round-by-round updates

MMA Fighting has Canelo Alvarez vs. Jermell Charlo live round-by-round updates for one of the most anticipated boxing fights of the year at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday night.

The main event is expected to begin around 11:15 p.m. ET on FITE TV pay-per-view. Check out our Canelo vs. Charlo results page to find out what happened on the undercard.

Canelo Alvarez (59-2-2) has won his last two fights by unanimous decision since losing to Dmitry Bivol more than a year ago. Alvarez last defeated John Ryder by points this past May.

Jermell Charlo (35-1-1) is 4-0-1 in his past five fights, most recently defeating Brian Castano via 10th-round knockout in his last outing in May 2022.

Canelo puts his undisputed super middleweight title on the line in the fight. Undisputed light middleweight champion Charlo jumps up two weight classes to face Canelo Alvarez.

Get the Canelo vs. Charlo round-by-round live blog below:

Round 1: Here we go, y’all. Main event time. Sherie absolutely bodies the national anthem. And here comes Jermell Charlo. He’s draped in an all-black robe with plenty of shimmer. The undisputed light middleweight champion of the world is locked in. And now it’s Canelo Alvarez’s turn. The crowd erupts in anticipation for their favorite. Canelo is seemingly walking out here with a whole army at his back. He’s draped in a gold and purple Dolce & Gabbana robe. This is quite a scene. The undisputed super middleweight champion, ladies and gentlemen. Harvey Dock is your referee for this contest. Big-time boos in the T-Mobile Arena for Charlo’s introduction. The total opposite reaction for Canelo’s. The two champs touch ‘em up and we’re off! Charlo fires off first, pawing out his jab. Canelo spends the first minute circling and collecting data. Canelo misses with lunging left hook. Charlo is circling, lots of movement here, mixed with the occasional jab. Canelo finds a home for a stiff shot to the body. Canelo unloads a careful one-two. Just a single punch landed for each man in that one. MMA Fighting scores it 10-9 Charlo.

Round 2: That was very much a fact-finding round for Canelo. He comes out stalking Charlo into the corner, then loading up with his left. Canelo pumps his jab and smacks Charlo with a long one. Now business is picking up. Charlo lands to the body. Canelo answers with a right hand to the body of his own. Charlo wades inside and Canelo clinches. And again. Charlo triples up on his jab, only to eat a hard punch to the liver from Canelo. Thus far Canelo appears to be the far more powerful puncher. Canelo feigns a hard right hand. MMA Fighting scores it 10-9 Canelo. (19-19 overall.)

Round 3: Canelo stands the entire time

Elijah Garcia vs. Armando Resendiz

Round 1: Here we go y’all. Main card is underway! Middleweights open the show for us. Lots of empty seats in the T-Mobile Arena right now. Veteran referee Tony Weeks is your third man in the ring. Garcia pops out his jab. Both men taking their time and using their lead hands to measure distance. Garcia is nonstop with that jab, just touch-touch-touching. Nice counter left from Garcia. Resendiz fires off a flurry. Garcia responds with an uppercut that snaps Resendiz’s head back. Huge straight left by Garcia puts Resendiz on wobbly legs!! He’s smelling blood now. Garcia smacks Resendiz a few more times but he survives to the bell. MMA Fighting scores it 10-9 Garcia.

Round 2: Resendiz comes out on a mission, throwing punches in bunches and trying to make up the gap after a shaky first round. Garcia is rolling with most of these. More shots from Resendiz, and he’s starting to find a home with some of these now. Oh, nasty hook from Resendiz. Garcia needs to get something going. Another machine-gun burst of punches from Resendiz. Big round for him. MMA Fighting scores it 10-9 Resendiz. (19-19 overall.)

Round 3: Now it’s Garcia who comes out with more urgency. He splits the guard of Resendiz and smacks him with a stiff left. Resendiz circles and paws out his jab. This is a gotdang fire-fight, y’all. Garcia swarms with a flurry of shots inside the pocket. Resendiz tries to fire back but eats a hard left-hand counter for his troubles. Nonetheless, Resendiz continues to stalk forward with his jab. Garcia is grinning, he’s having the time of his life in there. MMA Fighting scores it 10-9 Garcia. (29-28 Garcia.)

Round 4: Immediate collision in the center of the ring and we’re back at it. Resendiz is apparently averaging more than 100 punches thrown per round, and Garcia isn’t far behind. Garcia hangs back and cracks Resendiz with a counter left. That was nice. He’s picking his shots now. Hard right hand from Resendiz but Garcia responds with a slick flurry. Resendiz snaps Garcia’s head back with a jab. Stiff one-two lands for Garcia. Wild exchange from both men. Hell of a round. MMA Fighting scores it 10-9 Garcia. (39-37 Garcia.)

Round 5: Both men go right back to work. Resendiz staying active with his jab to the head and body, but Garcia seems to have his timing a bit more figured out. Garcia playing defense and cracking Resendiz with counters. Oh, big combination by Garcia! That was slick. MMA Fighting scores it 10-9 Garcia. (49-46 Garcia.)

Round 6: Resendiz’s jab is relentless, but Garcia’s defense is negating most of it. Garcia unloads a beautiful five-punch combination that cracks Resendiz something fierce. Resendiz answers with a combination that snaps Garcia’s head back. Those are his best shots in a while. Garcia is still sitting back and waiting on counters, and they’re money. Just gorgeous work with some of these. MMA Fighting scores it 10-9 Garcia. (59-55 Garcia.)

Round 7: It’s frankly impressive that Resendiz is taking some of these punches as well as he is. Garcia shells up and puts his jab in Resendiz’s face. Heck of a three-punch combination from Garcia. Garcia goes low then high, but Resendiz just keeps marching forward and winging looping hooks. One-two from Garcia. He smacks Resendiz with a left hand. Resendiz plants a stiff jab in Garcia’s face only to eat a big counter in return. MMA Fighting scores it 10-9 Garcia. (69-64 Garcia.)

Round 8: Resendiz comes out firing punches in bunches. Oh, nasty one-two comes back at him from Garcia. Huge body shot from Garcia!!! Resendiz crumbles to the canvas. That’s only the second time Resendiz has ever been dropped in his career. He makes the standing eight count, but Garcia is on him now. Garcia traps Resendiz in the corner and UNLOADS with punches! This is almost over! And that’s it, Weeks steps in to save Resendiz!!! Hell of a performance tonight by Garcia.

Elijah Garcia def. Armando Resendiz via TKO at 1:23 of Round 8

Yordenis Ugas vs. Mario Barrios

Round 1: Welterweight action up next. This one is for the WBC interim welterweight title. Ugas, 37, has been sidelined since getting knocked out by Errol Spence Jr. in April 2022. Barrios, 28, just defeated Jovanie Santiago t

Legendary boxing commentator Jim Lampley compares Terence Crawford to ‘Sugar’ Ray Leonard

Although Jim Lampley hasn’t been consistently active in the boxing commentary scene, he has certainly been paying attention to what undisputed welterweight champion Terence Crawford has been doing inside the squared circle.

Pros react after Canelo Alvarez defeats Jermell Charlo

Canelo Alvarez put his undisputed super middleweight title on the line against undisputed junior middleweight champion Jermell Charlo this evening in Las Vegas.

Canelo Alvarez, Jermell Charlo, Boxing, Pros React

Alvarez (60-2-2, 30 KO’s) entered the contest on a two-fight winning streak, this after scoring unanimous decision victories over Gennady Golovkin and John Ryder in his most previous efforts. Those wins were preceded by a unanimous decision loss to Dmitry Bivol, a defeat which snapped the Mexican’s 16-fight unbeaten streak.

Meanwhile, Jermell Charlo (35-2-1, 19 KO’s) entered tonight’s contest boasting a five-fight unbeaten streak, his most previous effort resulting in a tenth-round knockout over Brian Castano in May of last year. ‘Iron Man’ had suffered his lone career defeat to Tony Harrison by unanimous decision in December of 2018.

While Canelo Alvarez already had his legacy cemented years ago, he was determined to silence the critics speculating of his decline when he took to the ring this evening at T-Mobile Arena.

Tonight’s ‘Canelo vs. Charlo’ title fight proved to be a one-sided affair. Canelo Alvarez looked in prime form and was able to walkdown Jermell Charlo for the majority of the fight. The Mexican legend scored a knockdown of the ‘Iron Man’ in round seven and brutalized the body of his foe during the entire course of their twelve-round contest.

Official Result: Canelo Alvarez def. Jermell Charlo by unanimous decision (118-109 x2, 119-108)
