Canelo Alvarez defeats Jermell Charlo (Highlights)

Canelo Alvarez puts his undisputed super middleweight title on the line against undisputed junior middleweight champion Jermell Charlo this evening in Las Vegas.

Canelo Alvarez, Jermell Charlo, Boxing, Results

Alvarez (60-2-2, 30 KO’s) enters the contest on a two-fight winning streak, this after scoring unanimous decision victories over Gennady Golovkin and John Ryder in his most recent efforts. Those wins were preceded by a unanimous decision loss to Dmitry Bivol, a defeat which snapped the Mexican’s 16-fight unbeaten streak.

Meanwhile, Jermell Charlo (35-2-1, 19 KO’s) currently boasts a five-fight unbeaten streak, his most recent effort resulting in a tenth-round knockout over Brian Castano in May of last year. ‘Iron Man’ suffered his lone career defeat to Tony Harrison by unanimous decision in December of 2018.

While Canelo Alvarez cemented his legacy years ago, he is determined to silence the critics speculating of his decline this evening at T-Mobile Arena.

Round one of ‘Canelo vs. Charlo’ begins and the opening ninety-seconds is really more of a staring contest than anything. Canelo Alvarez opens things up by going to the body. Charlo hasn’t done much of anything yet. Another rip to the body by Canelo. That does it for a very tentative opening round.

Round two and Canelo Alvarez is beginning to get to work with his jab. The referee warns the Mexican about pushing and the crowd isn’t impressed. A good body shot from Canelo. Jermell Charlo finally answers with a combination. Big rights now from Alvarez.

Round three and Jermell Charlo lands good right. He follows it up with a left hook and then forces the clinch. The fighters are separated and now it is Canelo Alvarez charging forward with big punches. A big right hand from Canelo and Charlo is forced to clinch up. Jerme

Canelo Alvarez vs Jermell Charlo live fight updates, results, highlights from 2023 boxing fight

T-MOBILE ARENA, LAS VEGAS — Reports of Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s decline have been greatly exaggerated.

The reigning face of boxing made it look easy as he retained his undisputed super middleweight title by dominating Jermell Charlo.

And it wasn’t even remotely close.

Charlo already had a significant mountain to climb by moving up two weight classes and leaving his undisputed super welterweight status behind for the biggest fight of his career. But there are clearly levels to the boxing game and Charlo was either unprepared or unwilling to deal with one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world.

Charlo delivered a listless performance as Canelo bulled his way forward and tormented his opponent’s body for much of the fight, scoring a knockdown in round seven to provide the only real drama of the evening.

“I worked the whole fight on going to the body, and then I changed it up. That’s what happens when you change the punch,” Canelo said about the knockdown.

Canelo pursued Charlo and realized very quickly that his opponent was overmatched. With Charlo spending most of the fight with his back against the ropes, Canelo rumbled forward and slugged away at the body, fired an efficient jab, and landed the occasional hook to the head.

There wasn’t much that Canelo could do aside from following Charlo around and looking for an opening to land power shots. That opportunity presented itself in the seventh round when a body shot was followed by a right hand to the temple which caused Charlo to take a knee.

After that, it was a game of survival for Charlo.

With fans filtering out in the later rounds due to an insurmountable lead, Canelo appeared to become annoyed with Charlo’s unwillingness to engage. The scores reflected that as Canelo won with tallies of 119-108, 118-109 & 118-109.

“Nobody can beat this Canelo,” “Cinco De Mayo. I’ll come back and fight anybody. I don’t f—ing care.”

Canelo (59-2-2, 39 KOs) successfully made his third defense of the undisputed super middleweight championship. He unified all four major titles when he knocked out Caleb Plant in November 2021.

After suffering a hiccup when he fell short in attempting to gain light heavyweight gold against Dmitry Bivol, the 33-year-old superstar has now won three fights in a row and will wait to see what’s next. The obvious choice for many is a megafight with undisputed welterweight champion Terence Crawford. However, Crawford would need to move up 21 pounds for that fight to happen and he’s engaged in a potential rematch with Errol Spence.

Other options appear to be David Benavidez and Jermell’s older brother, Jermall Charlo.

As for Charlo, he still owns the IBF, WBA, and WBC championships and can return to the 154-pound division to defend those titles. Charlo called out Crawford, but after this performance, it is unlikely that Crawford would be interested.

Here’s how it all went down in Las Vegas.

Canelo Alvarez vs. Jermell Charlo live updates, results, highlights

Round Twelve: Canelo chops Charlo with a short right. More people head for the exit. Uppercut to the body for Canelo and more people start moving to the exit. Charlo lands a left hook. Charlo continues to throw hands but eats a body shot. Canelo looks upset as the fight ends.

SN Unofficial Scorecard: 10-9 Canelo (120-107 Canelo)

Round Eleven: It’s more of the same as Canelo is jabbing and looking for one big shot. More body punches. Charlo appears to have checked out of winning and checked into the survival hotel. Canelo throws bombs at Charlo and lands a few. The deepest sigh. Another round for Canelo.

T-MOBILE ARENA, LAS VEGAS — Saul “Canelo” Alvarez denied Jermell Charlo‘s quest to be undisputed in a second weight class as he cruised to a unanimous decision victory to retain his own undisputed super middleweight titles.

Charlo promised to give Canelo all he could handle but he gave the sport’s biggest star absolutely nothing to worry about over the course of 12 one-sided rounds.

Charlo already had a significant mountain to climb by moving up two weight classes and leaving his undisputed super welterweight status behind for the biggest fight of his career. Saul “Canelo” Àlvarez scored a unanimous decision win over Jermell Charlo to successfully defend his WBA, WBC, WBO, and IBF super middleweight titles in a matchup of undisputed champions at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

118-109 twice and 119-108 for Canelo Alvarez

Canelo looked sharp early on. He spent a lot of the opening rounds getting his reads and processing information but he also landed some hard body shots that got Charlo thinking.

Audley Harrison MBE @audleyharrison

I think Canelo got into Charlo’s head, so he needs to find his feet & get some confidence early on, and not get hurt. If he can do that, he can make a good go of it … #CaneloCharlo

As Canelo got settled in, his gameplan became more clear. He stalked Charlo down, put pressure on and waited to counter whatever the challenger threw his way.

Chris Mannix @SIChrisMannix

4-0, Canelo (though if you want to go 10-10 on that first, I’d understand). Charlo has been on the defensive all night. Canelo’s commitment to the body has been a difference maker early.

All of Canelo’s early work started to really pay off in the sixth round. He cracked Charlo with a few punches that clearly impacted Charlo. The late success in the midpoint round worked to set up a big moment for him in Round 7.

A tight right hand sent Charlo down for just the second time in his entire career.

The 4 Best Opponents for Canelo Alvarez After Win vs. Jermell Charlo

Welcome back, everyone, to Canelo World.

Boxing’s longest-running pay-per-view stalwart reascended his throne Saturday night in Las Vegas, toppling ambitious challenger Jermell Charlo by a near shutout at T-Mobile Arena.

Two judges gave him 10 of 12 rounds and the third judge had it 11-1.

It was a third straight victory and a third straight successful defense of a quartet of belts for the undisputed champion at 168 pounds, who’s now 9-0 in the weight class and 60-2-2 since turning professional as a 15-year-old in 2005.

“Nobody can beat this Canelo,” Alvarez said. “Nobody can beat me.”

For Charlo, it was a losing conclusion to an ambitious experiment that saw him climb from his own undisputed status at 154 pounds after his twin brother, Jermall, a title claimant at 160 who’d been offered the fight with Alvarez, declined the opportunity.

The next chance to share a marquee with Alvarez is now up for grabs, with fighters residing anywhere from 147 to 175 pounds being talked about as a potential encore. The B/R combat team marked the occasion by taking a look at available options and compiling a list of who we think makes the most sense for the next time around.

Take a look at what we came up with and drop a thought of your own in the comments.

Jake Paul

    So…you’re saying there’s a chance?

Though he’d long dismissed the idea of engaging social media agitator Jake Paul in a boxing ring, Alvarez nudged the door open in the days leading into the Charlo fight.

“Why not? I think it’s good because other people who never watch boxing, they don’t know anything about boxing. They wanna watch Jake Paul because he brings fans from other worlds, not boxing fans,” he told the Full Send Podcast. “That’s good, because everybody enjoy it. What they do, I think they do for business and you need to respect that.”

    As a fight, it’d be a mismatch. As an event, it’d be a can’t-miss.

And don’t suggest for a second you’d not watch, because we don’t believe you.

Paul, for his sake, has long suggested he’d be up to the task.

“He’s a killer at 168 pounds, but people forget that I naturally walk around at about 205, so there’s a big weight difference. There’s a big height advantage,” he told Maxim’s Tom Taylor in 2021. “Canelo hasn’t fought someone who has really challenged him in the last couple of fights. They’ve all been easy guys who just sort of fall on their ass.”

Dmitry Bivol

Let’s be clear: If we’re Canelo’s managers, this fight never happens.

Based on 36 minutes of evidence from their initial get-together in May of 2022, it’s

Super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez dropped and defeated overmatched Jermell Charlo by a one-sided decision to retain his titles.

The official scores were 119-108, 118-109 and 118-109. Boxing Junkie also scored it 118-109 for Alvarez, 10 rounds to two.

Alvarez (60-2-2, 39 KOs) applied overwhelming pressure on Charlo (35-2-1, 19 KOs) from the second round on, consistently landing punishing blows to the head and body.

Charlo, who had moved up two divisions for the fight, tried to move and pepper Alvarez with quick blows to keep him at bay but he didn’t throw enough punches or have enough power to earn Alvarez’s respect.

Alvarez put Charlo down in Round 7, when a straight right dazed the challenger and forced him to take a knee.

Charlo survived that punch and proved to be both durable and clever enough to last the entire 12 rounds against a naturally bigger man, which many believed would be difficult.

The victory was particularly gratifying for Alvarez, who many suggested was in decline after sub-par performances in his previous three fights.

You can read a full report here.

Round 1

Mostly a feel-out round, as neither guy did much. Charlo jabbed a little. Alvarez probably won the round with a few body shots, one particularly hard one about two minutes into the fight.

Round 2

Strong round for Alvarez. The champion has already cut off the ring, as Charlo isn’t giving him a reason to back off. As a result, he landed a number of eye-catching power shots in the second round. Not a good start for Charlo.

Round 3

More of the same. Charlo moved a little more and was somewhat busier but Alvarez stayed in Charlo’s face and landed some hard, accurate shots to the head and body. Charlo is going to have to adjust or he will have big problems.

Round 4

Better round for Charlo, who landed several good power shots that got Alvarez’s attention. They didn’t slow him down, though. Alvarez kept coming, kept firing off ill-intended shots and landed many of them.

Round 5

Charlo had some good moments — a combination late in the round was particularly impressive — but he can’t change
