Recently, there has been a hot debate that is going around on the question- Who is the ‘face of boxing’ now? Many believe Canelo Alvarez holds that mantle but this question has had people divided as some believe Gervonta Davis to be the ‘face of boxing’. This all started when after beating Ryan Garcia, ‘Tank’ was asked if he believes that he is the ‘face of boxing’ now, and ‘Tank’ replied, “Abso-f—ing-lutely”. However, prior to his fight against John Ryder, Alvarez chose to take a shot at Davis and made a statement that he’s not retired yet. The fight took place and Alvarez achieved a dominating victory against Ryder, though he couldn’t end the fight in a knockout.

At the beginning of the event, the seats were pretty much empty, however as the time for their fight arrived, the stadium was filled to the brim. Over 50,000 people were present to watch the duo go at each other, meaning just the gate for the fight was around $1 million. Recently, a Twitter user, Ray Jackson, shared the news of the PPV numbers for the fight. He claimed that the PPV buys were around 220k- 235k. However, fans were quick to point out their disbelief over his claims.

Boxing fans had a lot to say when the news broke about the pay-per-view sales of the Canelo Alvarez vs John Ryder fight. Smart Casual Sports expressed surprise at the fact that Canelo’s PPV numbers were similar to those of ‘Tank’ Davis’. He complimented Alvarez on pulling so much attraction even without an opponent like Ryan Garcia.

Canelo Alvarez (59-2-2) successfully defended his WBO, IBF, WBA and WBC super middleweight titles and continued his rebound from the second loss of his illustrious boxing career on Saturday night with a unanimous-decision win over John Ryder (32-6).

The location of the fight made Canelo’s win over Ryder even sweeter as the 32-year-old handled business in front of a packed crowd at Estadio Akron, Zapopan in his hometown of Jalisco, Mexico.

In what appeared to be one of the smallest rings I can remember seeing in a championship fight in some time, Canelo outgunned the game, but overmatched Ryder en route to the easy decision victory (118-109, 118-109, and 120-107).

Round 1: Lots of movement and feinting to start, neither man wants to make a mistake. Canelo striking first with punches from range. There’s a right to the body for the champion. Ryder pushes Canelo to the ropes and is looking for an opening to land body shots, but Canelo’s defense is tight. Canelo with a methodical approach as he picks his spots.

Round 2: Canelo starts the second with a few steady jabs. He hits Ryder with a couple of punches to the body. Ryder just not doing much of anything so far. Round 3: Big right hand connects for Canelo, hardest shot of the fight so far. Looks like that has Ryder bleeding. Canelo rips a couple of stiff punches to the body. Ryder attacks the body, but he’s a step slow. Canelo starting to throw the straight right. He connects with it off of couple of jabs. Ryder looking to counter. He hits Canelo to the body. Canelo backs him up to the ropes and lets a couple of right hands fly. Ryder blocks them, but the impact was still felt.

Alvarez had hinted at retirement with a loss to Ryder, but the Guadalajara, Mexico, crowd’s reaction revealed anything but skepticism.

It was mastery at its finest from a champion with a lot to prove, and for some, to add to a fitting chapter in a legendary career.
