Did Canelo Alvarez win against GGG in their two previous boxing fights?

Did Canelo Alvarez win against GGG in their two previous boxing fights?

Ahead of tonight’s trilogy, we recap the results and who won the first two fights between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin.

The entire boxing world is anxiously waiting for Saturday evening as in the iconic T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Saul Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin face off for the third time.

The anticipation for this trilogy has become palpable over recent days as pundits, experts and former professionals swing back and forth in their predictions.

The opening bell will mark the start of the 25th scheduled round between Canelo and GGG, but who won their first two fights in 2017 and 2018 respectively?

Who won the previous two Canelo vs GGG fights?

The first fight between Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin in 2017 ended in a split draw, the second fight in 2018 was won by Alvarez via majority decision.

Straight away it’s important to note that both results were highly controversial, with criticism especially levied against the first fight’s judging.

This fight was scored 118–110 (Alvarez), 113–115 (Golovkin), 114–114 (draw), with the majority of pundits and personalities scoring the bout for the Kazakh.

In fact, DAZN, who are broadcasting tonight’s PPV trilogy, recently ran a fight replay with boxing experts Chris Walker, Matt Astbury and Steven Muehlhausen. Their final result, in accordance with the court of public opinion, was “a unanimous decision for Golovkin with cards of 117-111, 116-112 and 116-112.”

The second fight was thankfully more straightforward, with the Mexican winning a majority decision; two judges scored the bout for Canelo (both 115-113), and one judge scored it a draw (114-114).

What are the two fighters’ boxing records in 2022?

As of September 17th, 2022, prior to the trilogy with GGG, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez has a professional boxing record of 57 wins, 2 draws and 2 los

Canelo Alvarez has a lot to lose in Gennadiy Golovkin trilogy | Opinion

Canelo Alvarez has a lot to lose in Gennadiy Golovkin trilogy | Opinion

Canelo Alvarez is in a no-win situation if you put a guaranteed windfall aside.

If the Mexican star defeats Gennadiy Golovkin in their third fight Saturday, critics will say he took down a 40-year-old who is past his prime and moving up in weight for the fight. If he loses, it will come against that old man and be his second consecutive setback after a one-sided loss to Dmitry Bivol in May.

In other words, a victory wouldn’t have much of an impact on Alvarez’s legacy given Golovkin’s current limitations; a loss could damage it significantly.

What’s the upside for Alvarez?

Of course, he probably doesn’t have much to worry about. He’s a significant favorite to win the third fight against his rival – about 4½-1 – after a controversial draw in 2017and a majority decision victory the following year.

If he has his hand raised on Saturday, he will have bounced back from the loss to Bivol and can finally put his bumpy history with Golovkin behind him. He could then focus on starting new rivalries, which is what he’d like.

However, potential disaster lurks ominously around the corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Tropicana Avenue in Las Vegas, the site of T-Mobile Arena.

Golovkin isn’t what he used to be but he can’t be written off entirely, as some seem to be doing. He has only lost once in his 16-year professional career, after all. And he remains an elite fighter if you put stock in his middleweight titles and four victories following the second fight with Alvare

Canelo Alvarez will meet Michael B. Jordan in Creed III (after he’s done with GGG)

Canelo Alvarez will meet Michael B. Jordan in Creed III (after he’s done with GGG)

One of the biggest boxing series of the century is gearing up for a 2023 return. Filming for Creed III is underway and it ought to be as good as the first two installations.

One edge the trilogy might have over Creed I and II is casting. While Michael B. Jordan and Tessa Thompson are set for a return, there’s a real-life boxer apparently going to make a cameo, at the very least.

That boxer? Canelo Alvarez.

Jordan, who plays the lead role of Adonis Creed, revealed on Instagram a picture of himself and Alvarez with a caption that indicates Alvarez’s involvement in the upcoming film.

Speaking of trilogies, Canelo is a part of another one that comes much sooner.

On September 17th, he’ll face Gennady Golovkin in the ring for the third time. The first bout between the two resulted in a draw, and the second was a majority-decision win for Alvarez.

As we head into the third bout, Canelo opens up as a huge favorite (-650 at Tipico Spo
